If Alito is Blocked, Bush will be IMPEACHED
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 11:56 PM by berni_mccoy
Bush lost serious ground in his own party with the Miers nomination. If he fails to get Alito through, he'll lose significant support among the remaining 36% of Americans who are grasping onto one issue: his promise to the opponents of reproductive rights. He'll fall to 25% approval and those staunch supporters in Congress will have to give in to the unhappiness of their constituents. Bush will no longer be able to offer favors to keep them in lock-step and the control over Congress using lobbyist money has already been severely damaged.

If Alito is Blocked by Democrats, the minority party, the party that has no control over any of the branches of government, Bush's base will see him as a completely lame duck and it will be better for them to get someone stronger in office. The only problem is, they don't realize yet that it's not just the man, Bush, who is the problem, it's their whole ideology that is out of balance with the rest of America.

I'm just saying...

23. I think that Alito needs to be filibustered & the Dems to turn their backs
on Bush during the State of Emergency Speech....

Seriously, if there has ever, ever been a time in our country to stand up and fight the tyranny and threat to our Constitution, it is with those two very specific actions...

Good question Swamp Rat - Do any of the elected Politicians have the guts to stand up to the fascists as the G-town law students did? :eyes: I certainly hope so, because if they don't start fighting and standing up, then our country is really in danger.....

26. I did! It's beautiful Swamp Rat!
Thank you

I loved my birthday greeting! What a great image too! Where did you find it?

Anyway, I can't sleep right now....too much going on in my mind...atleast the kids are asleep right now...I am feeling very anxious about what is going on around me...in some ways, I checked out recently because of my need to focus on taking care of the house and family following the flood, but I've been watching from the corner of my eyes (and minds eye) what is happening in our country and government. Its getting very serious and the crisis our country is facing is scary....

Meanwhile, I got a call yesterday from my Aunt who works at G-town law school and she told me to turn CSPAN on to see the Gonzales/G-town forum....She knows I'm a fan of David Cole as well as another Law Professor their Neal Katyal (who recently worked on a big case in front of the Supreme Court).

Anyway, I thought those G-town Law students are awesome.....

I could use it right now...guess I'll just have to take a shower and try to do some meditation taking me there right now....

Here's a hug and some Pachamama energy coming your way Swamp Rat...

I know that my "cleanup" has been hell here from our flood and its only a fraction of what you all in NOLA suffered...I just removed another dumpster from my property and the cleanup still continues. The houses on both my sides are uninhabitable, one is a complete teardown and 4 of the houses around of are unoccupied for atleast the next several months as they re-build the interiors that were demolished...we are trying to look into raising our house and building a brand new foundation....ugh...just more money to expenses and ofcourse, no assistance of any kind...our area has not been declared a federal emergency area, so no one can qualify for the FEMA programs or loans etc. The only thing at this point that is our saving grace is a home equity loan and a tax write off for the loss. But our plans to buy in Canada just got put on hold...then again with the results of the Canadian elections, looks like Canada has caught the same disease the US is suffering from....ugh....

Have you ever just felt like things are so beyond our control that you just have to let things run their course and hunker down and hope that Pachamama is going to take care of you? That's how I'm feeling right now....

Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 12:08 AM by PBass
The whole GOP establishment is skating on thin ice, with the massive corruption scandals. Bush was skating on thin ice, even BEFORE the domestic spying scandal blew up in his face.

NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME TO BLOCK ALITO!!!

If Dems can't see that, then they are tone-deaf and they have no business being in "politics"!!!

Bush needs to nominate a MODERATE to replace O'Conner, or NO DEAL!!!

8. I watched the repuke press conference
following the judiciary committee vote, and those bastards were not happy campers. They were pissed that the Dems had stood together and stood their ground against Judge Coat-Hanger. There was none of the usual gloating.

If ever there was a time for the Dems to declare "Enough is enough," the time is now. The water is bloody. It's time to go in for the (figurative, of course) kill.

Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 12:46 AM by regnaD kciN
...which "moderate" Dems would do well to heed.

Bush is on the ropes right now. But a major victory on one issue can change everything. If Alito gets confirmed, conventional wisdom, and the corporate media, will give Bush a great deal of credit for "pushing his way to a big win" by getting Alito on the Court despite his ultraconservative reputation. The meme of the day will be that Bush "is on the comeback trail," which will make it easier for him to skate on all the other scandals facing him or his party, from Plamegate to warrantless snooping to Abramoff. Republicans will be quicker to "stand with the President," while fence-straddling Dems will be more reluctant to go hard after him.

Conversely, a failure to block Alito will be a blow to Democratic hopes in 2006 and beyond. Progressive activists will be enraged at a Dem failure to fight for them, while other observers will not fail to note "typical Democratic weakness" in failing to mount even a serious challenge on a matter with such massive and long-lasting implications. And, when November comes around, even voters critical of Bush may well stay home, reasoning that, even if there was a chance for a congressional takeover, the Democrats have shown that, beyond giving lip-service, they will never really be able to get their act together and actually accomplish anything.

I really think this is a "do or die" issue. If we win at this, it will be the beginning of the end for Bush Republicanism. If, however, the Democrats don't put up a strong, smart fight here, and prevail, "that's all she wrote" for the forseeable future.

"And, when November comes around, even voters critical of Bush may well stay home, reasoning that, even if there was a chance for a congressional takeover, the Democrats have shown that, beyond giving lip-service, they will never really be able to get their act together and actually accomplish anything."

You have described me to a tee. And I am FAR from alone.

20. I agree the Alito issue is symbolic, and
not just how he will alter the direction of the Supreme Court...

Dumbya has spent his entire presidency OVER-REACHING and has rarely (if ever) been held accountable. Picking a far-right judge like Alito is another example of Bush over-reaching.

Time is ripe for the opposition party to start putting an end to Bush's arrogance!

25. One thing alot of dems don't seem to understand and
the average citizen surely doesn't is that this court when assembled can strike down progressive legislation as well as strike down existing laws they don't like. This is going to be a setback for a whole generation. IT CAN'T BE FIXED by a democratic takeover of congress, at least NOT in any timely manner. The pendulum swing will be essentially stuck. The two party system will be nothing much more than lipstick on a pig, a pig called a one party state.

A lot more can happen in 3 years, and I'm afraid there will be more retirees from the court. If Bush gets to pick another one, it will be an absolute disaster.

28. Filibuster vs. "nuclear option"
There was a lively debate the other day on Air America (Ed Schultz) regarding the tradeoff of filibuster vs. nuclear option. L. Graham, after all, is threatening to "clean (our) clock" if we dare to disrupt the right's goosestepping march towards complete domination. I say "bring it on"!!
We can no longer ignore the fact that this country, thanks to the current administration, is split in two. Now it's time to lay it on the line. Just what side has more support?
With a filibuster, we are throwing down the gauntlet.
This will provoke the "soft" civil war that needs to be fought (I certainly don't mean a violent war here).
Our freedom is in the balance.

37. I think the psychology is the other way around....
Having nominated and fought for Alito has energized Bush's base, regardless of the outcome. If Alito is blocked, the base will blame it on us. I would say that they would even further demonize us, but I don't know if that is possible.

Remember, they hate us for our freedom.

They've called us communists, god-hating and terrorists... most recently associating our dissent with terrorists and traitors. The only next step is to start locking us up... and I won't put that past this fascist regime (it's not a government anymore, but a regime).

America better wake up now before they start waking up in concentration camps.
