Sex scandal angers Americans because they "understand it"

I've heard several of those strikingly beautiful t.v. newsreaders opine that the reason this sex scandal story 'has legs' is that we the people can understand it. The fact that this is what it finally took to throw a wrench into the neo conazi death/money machine.

They suggest that we can accept torture, spying, unnecessary wars, ever increasing numbers of casualties, thousands of tortured bodies lying in the streets of Baghdad, massive piracy and corruption, etc., etc., etc., but we can't understand all that, its too complicated for us dumbasses who roam the plains.

But all day yesterday I heard them say that we understand this just fine, there's sex in it, thats why its struck a nerve, we can relate, its about our kids, etc.

It is truly bizarre, especially for a highly advanced alien civilization who might be observing all this from orbit with amusement.

3. The very sad part is, I'm afraid they might be right.

Weren't DUers opining about this themselves just last night? After all the horrible things Bushco has done, it took a sex scandal to make some people begin really paying attention?

It's sad, but it's true. You can stack Abu Ghraib prisoners to the ceiling, and some people will say hey, they're terrorists so who cares? You can listen in on their phone calls, and they'll say that's all right, I have nothing to hide. You can have ever increasing numbers of casualties and tortured bodies in the streets of Baghdad, and they'll blame those nasty liberals who don't support our troops in the Global War on Terrorism. You can have massive piracy and corruption, and they'll say, well, how can you blame a guy for wanting to be a success in business? You can even have dead bodies lying in the streets of New Orleans, and they'll say, well, why didn't those stupid people get out when they were told to?

But this? It's SERIES1111!!!111!!!! It involves a GAY MAN111!!!!!! Think of the CHILDREN1111!!!!!!

That is, if you can be sure they were indeed children. If Matt Drudge tells you they weren't, by all means roll over and go back to sleep! They were just little devils deliberately trying to entrap a poor innocent congressman who couldn't help it because he is inflicted with the Disease of Homosexuality!!!!

As for that advanced alien civilization, they're looking down on us like the aliens in "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" from The Twilight Zone and saying to each other, "It really IS incredible! They don't care about anything but sex!"

4. They're right...

...it gets Americans "in the gut" as Stephen Colbert would say.

Of course, the other part of it might be (and this would be even scarier) that Americans see torture, spying, corruption, greed-based wars abroad, and malign neglect at home as "the price of doing business." It's "just the way the world works." They are jaded about important matters.

But sex scandals? That can still hit people smack across their tabloid sensibilities.

5. Everybody loves a sex scandal!

We've all got our little secrets and even if we don't, we all know someone who does. It's the one thing everybody can be an instant expert on because you can relate it to your own life--and in this case your own fears.

Mark Foley is Michael Jackson in a suit. That's easy isn't it?

The Republican leaders who protected him, in order to protect the seat from the Democrats, are like those Bishops who transferred priests who were a little too fond of the altar boys instead of reporting them to the authorities.

There are alot of people who can relate to that one too.

Your average person, who does not follow politics closely, can have an opinion that will not be swayed by spin or the competing issues, accusations and values that politicians and pundits throw at each other.

Ordinary people can actually look at the facts and the facts in this case are damning.

6. I hate to tell you.

.... but I agree with them.

When it comes to complex world affairs, many Americans have GIVEN UP on knowing any objective truth, in the media it's just a he-said she-said game. The leadup to the Iraq war is a perfect example, Americans were largely in support of the war out of SHEER IGNORANCE.

But there isn't a whole lot of spinning one can do about Foley's situation. They are trying god bless them but it's not going to work because Democrats have a brain and Republicans a vindictive self-righteous streak. :)
