I don't think many people realize how indiscriminate use of a word can weaken it's power. Using terms like pedophile diminish the true meaning of the word. Over use could lead to someone being harmed because the term had lost it's power, causing real reports to be ignored, or slowly reacted on. Think of the word hero, and how it's over use has seriously negated the power the term once held.

The term sexual predator is more correct. One could add hypocrite, morally bankrupt, major abuse of power as well. What he did was bad enough, and easy enough to frame in damaging terms, no need to be hyperbolic.

It's just a shame you can't point out the truth to some without being labeled sick yourself, no matter if you are right.

As a parent, here are the choices:

CHOICE A:

Someone has criminally wronged my child and has caused him/her harm and most likely has done this to other children and will continue in the same manner in the future. Yes, it will be embarassing and perhaps painful for my child and family to go through the system and see that this person preying on children is punished and kept from harming others. But...as a good parent and citizen, there simply is no other choice.

CHOICE B:

I am a good GOP-ster, I am born again, I have family values and I love George Bush, the "terra" prez. The guy was just "over-friendly" with my kid. There is no reason to go forward with this. Hey, why punish someone who was just showing interest in my kid?

Media tends to refer to the first and not the second. Sometimes the IM's "graphic" content might be mentioned, but generally the media story is that Foley resigned over "over friendly" emails, which isn't at all the case. The explicit IM's in the hands of ABC and the prospect of more such stuff coming out is what triggered Foley's resignation.

I attribute the coverage in some part to the media's general laziness and tendency to simplify and get the story wrong. In part, I say. They also don't like to take on the GOP, that we know. But if it had been a Dem the story would be different, the RW pundits they have on would on reading excerpts from the IM's. Since Foley is GOP they have on RW pundits minimizing the story and making Foley the victim of the media.

I almost blew a fuse. I think her name is Contessa Brewer -- pretty brunette with long hair.

She reported about the emails and that is when she said that he had gotten a little too friendly with former page. They showed those lines about asking for a picture -- very innocuous compared to what we have read from the IMS. She then said that ABC had IMs but that MSNBC was not going to be reporting on those! The whole report segment left the impression he had only engaged in mildly inappropriate/creepy speech instead of the full-on sex talk he was doing.
