We've lost America. We tried our best, but it's gone.
Edited on Fri Sep-29-06 06:55 PM by Redstone
We'll keep fighting, of course, because, well, we can't NOT fight. That would be un-American, wouldn't it?

Some day, I hope deep in my heart, we'll find something in the ashes that's worth resurrecting.

And if not, my hope is at least that sometime in the future, some historian will take note of us and and write "Surprisingly, yes, there WERE indeed some real Americans left, even in those dark days of the first decade of the 21st century. They tried. At least, in the words of Clinton, they tried."

15. What's to keep King George
from locking up Stevens, Ginsberg, or Kennedy as enemy combatants?

2. No we haven't. Chin up, Redstone.
Foley, Woodward's book, the mismanagement of the war, and the Abramoff scandal took up the majority of the network news tonight.
If people who watch news haven't been totally disgusted, they might be now.

Have faith!:hi:

3. But those people don't know that the Constitution has just been
dismantled. And won't know, until Emperor Bush decides that they're an "enemy combatant," and they just disappear.

19. I have to keep faith that we'll attain the majority and
reverse the damage they've done. It's doable. The damage they've done is evident; I have to believe they're not going to start making people 'disappear', and wonder if they're even organized to do that? Their handling of Katrina was an absolute flop, though possibly intentional.
I do think at times people give them way too much credit.

4. On the movie
"Champions Forever," there's a part where George Foreman talks about watching then-heavyweight champion Joe Frazier defending his title against Jerry Quarry. Big George told of how, after the third round -- which was a classic slugfest -- Smoking Joe went back to his corner, grinning and hitting himself in the head. Joe loved the heat of tough competition. We need to be like that.

(* That was their 6-23-69 fight, not the 6-17-74 rematch.)

6. what's that line from "captain galaxy? "Never give up, never
surrender." we are allowed a few moments of despair, sadness, hopelessness, but only a few. "illegitimati non carburundum" (extremely bastardized latin for "don't let the bastards grind you down." I, for one, am just too damned stubborn to give up.

so, agent mikey, and all you other re-incarnated SS thugs out there, a rigidly extended middle digit (remd)to you all.

set her free.

Never forget the words of Winston Churchill: Never give up. Never, never, never, never, NEVER give up!

9. Cheer up!
The Repugs are really against a wall right now with the Foley and Allen hoopla. They were expecting to glide through October on security talk up until election day. But all of this other stuff is taking them for quite a ride.

It's gonna get interesting. :)

16. So how the FUCK is it that, with all their problems, they STILL rammed
through that bill that dismantles the Constitution? THAT's what I don't get.

They seem to be on the ropes, but ALWAYS get their way on the important stuff.

WHY?

13. America is gone
And if you believe that I have bridges to sell.

Bad things have happened but to write this country off is ridiculous. This country has done lots of good too, and this fatalistic stuff is over the top.

Redstone, most of your posts I agree with, but this...nooo.

OK, everyone curl up under a rock and just die. It's all gone anyway. Doesn't matter. It's over, we might as well all slit our wrists.

18. Where, specifically, did I say "curl up...?" I said we'll keep fighting.
At least I will.

And I'm sure many others will as well. But as some of us fall by the wayside, as we must as in any battle, who is there to take our place in the breach? Are there enough?

24. You didn't say curl up
It was the "lost" and "gone" that bothered me. That means past tense, as in already toast. I hear you though, we must not let that happen.

20. as I pointed out to redstone, after that disgusting performance
yesterday, we are allowed a few moments of despair, etc. as cynical as I am, as long as I have been politically involved, even I didn't really believe this travesty would actually pass. alas, it appears my cynicism isn't deep enough.

people are tired, upset, shocked, and right now, throwing in the towel seems rather attractive. but tomorrow is another day, and one we will be here to do the right things.

so ease off, please? some people are just having a very hard time watching the betrayal of this country by the people who are supposed to be protecting it.

27. Thank you. You cannot know how much that means. Those with combat
wounds have a physical as well as a spiritual despair.

Still, I cannot believe all was for nothing. But it does seem so sometimes, doesn't it?

The betrayal we saw yesterday was even more of an insult to those who have bled for this country; all of those who have bled and died for almost 300 years.

And for what?

23. Some Days It's Hard
Every day for me is a battle between hope and despair, or belief and nihilism. Somedays I just want to detach completely from humanity, and other days I still feel the fire burning. I don't know what the answer is, but I hope each of us find it. But I had the identical feeling today, listening to Randi Rhodes, that something had been lost that was irrevocable.

The America we know will be back stronger than ever. Even if it doesn't happen in my lifetime, our children and grandchildren will carry on the fight. For me, I'll be fighting til my dying day and from beyond the grave if I can.
