The Republican House leadership has known about Foley for a year
The page worked for Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-La., who said Friday that when he learned of the e-mail exchanges 10 to 11 months ago, he called the teen's parents. Alexander told the Ruston Daily Leader, "We also notified the House leadership that there might be a potential problem," a reference to the House's Republican leaders.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert said Friday he had asked the chairman of the House's page board, Rep. John Shimkus, R-Ill., to investigate the page system. "We want to make sure that all our pages are safe and the page system is safe," Hastert said.

He said Foley submitted the letter of resignation to Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and submitted a copy to him. A House clerk read Foley's resignation on the House floor.

"He's done the right thing," Hastert said. Asked if the chain of events was disturbing, he said, "None of us are very happy about it."

as is anybody ELSE that knew and did not go to law enforcement about it.

"Greatest" page. You've found THE MOST TIMELY STORY EVER in my opinion.

I'd suggest something like, HOUSE SPEAKER COMPLICIT IN FOLEY TEEN SEX SCANDAL COVERUP?

IMO, tonight is no time for subtlety. The Republicans may be on the ropes--you may have the makings of a knockout punch if the alternative, then mainstream media frame this story appropriately.

46. HOUSE SPEAKER COMPLICIT IN FOLEY TEEN SEX SCANDAL COVERUP?
Foley adds a whole new meaning to "I don't like Bush."

This saga is just beginning. If Hastert knew (and it sounds as though he did), he and others are complicit in covering up the sexual exploitation of a child. Democrats should be seeking a thorough investigation.

"Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-La., who sponsored the page from his district, told reporters that he learned of the e-mails from a reporter some months ago and passed on the information to Rep. Thomas Reynolds, R-N.Y., chairman of the House Republican campaign organization.

Alexander said he did not pursue the matter further because "his parents said they didn't want me to do anything."

Carl Forti, a spokesman for the GOP campaign organization, said Reynolds learned from Alexander that the parents did not want to pursue the matter. Forti said, however, that the matter did go before the House Page Board - the three lawmakers and two House officials who oversee the pages.

It was unclear what the officials did.

The board currently is headed by Rep. John Shimkus, R-Ill., who did not respond to requests for an interview.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert said Friday he had asked Shimkus to investigate the page system. "We want to make sure that all our pages are safe and the page system is safe," Hastert said.

Pages are high school students who attend classes under congressional supervision and work as messengers."

Anyone find it suspicious that it's alleged that parents allowed the abuse, while the teen says his mother isn't computer savvy?

The age of consent in Florida for male-female sex is 18. If the adult is 24 or under, the age of consent is 16. Male-male and female-female sex is illegal in Florida.

http://www.ageofconsent.com/ageofconsent.htm

This is soliciting underage child for sex. It's a crime. Tom Foley should be charged and tried.

"To be designated as a predator, the subject must have been found by the court to be a sexual predator. Florida law requires a written court finding for sexual predator status. Sexual predator designation only applies to sex offenses committed on or after October 1, 1993. In addition, the subject must have been convicted of either one first-degree felony sex crime, or two second degree felony sex crimes. In the latter situation, the second offense must occur within 10 years of the previous offense, conviction, or release from the sanction of the court, whichever is later."

"10. A Member of the House of Representatives who has been convicted by a court of record for the commission of a crime for which a sentence of two or more years' imprisonment may be imposed should refrain from participation in the business of each committee of which he is a member and should refrain from voting on any question at a meeting of the House, or of the Committee of the Whole House, unless or until judicial or executive proceedings result in reinstatement of the presumption of his innocence or until he is reelected to the House after the date of such conviction."

This young man was also subjected to sexual harassment in the workplace.

CODE OF ETHICS FOR GOVERNMENT SERVICE

Any person in Government service should:

1. Put loyalty to the highest moral principals and to country above loyalty to Government persons, party, or department.

2. Uphold the Constitution, laws, and legal regulations of the United States and of all governments therein and never be a party to their evasion.

3. Give a full day's labor for a full day's pay; giving to the performance of his duties his earnest effort and best thought.

4. Seek to find and employ more efficient and economical ways of getting tasks accomplished.

5. Never discriminate unfairly by the dispensing of special favors or privileges to anyone, whether for remuneration or not; and never accept for himself or his family, favors or benefits under circumstances which might be construed by reasonable persons as influencing the performance of his governmental duties.

6. Make no private promises of any kind binding upon the duties of office, since a Government employee has no private word which can be binding on public duty.

7. Engage in no business with the Government, either directly or indirectly which is inconsistent with the conscientious performance of his governmental duties.

8. Never use any information coming to him confidentially in the performance of governmental duties as a means for making private profit.

9. Expose corruption wherever discovered.

10. Uphold these principles, ever conscious that public office is a public trust.

After his dilly dally was exposed, Pam Roach - a Republican, need I say more - claimed West approached her and made a compromising statement to her about her son who was serving as a page in state house at the time. Apparently she, as did all the party members, knew of his reputation. As we know, they'll put up with the mightiestly stinking scum to hold office.

Edited on Fri Sep-29-06 08:17 PM by ProgressiveEconomist
to AmericaBlog in the OP ( http://americablog.blogspot.com/2006/09/house-gop-leadership-knew-about-foley.html ):

"(1) why did Republican House Speaker Denny Hastert permit Foley to remain in the House GOP leadership for almost a year after they knew he was having sex talk with minors online, minors he met on the job?

(2) Why did Republican House Speaker Denny Hastert leave Foley as the co-chair of the House body in charge of child sex offenses for a good year after they knew?

(3) Why did Republican House Speaker Denny Hastert permit Foley to stay in the House at all, where he would be around other pages every day all day long?

(4) And just as importantly, why did Republican House Speaker Denny Hastert let Foley lie publicly yesterday about the emails, claiming they were innocent, and simply a dirty attack from the Democrats, when the House leadership knew the real story?

(5) And finally, we find out that the FBI was contacted two months about this story. Was there any follow-up from the Bush FBI? Or did they just let this potential case of child sex offense go by the wayside because it involved a friend of Bush?"

33. Clinton should go on Olbermann tomorrow
and say, "at least I wasn't trying to bugger young boys in the page program"

but seriously, I AGREE 100%

how is HASTERT and anyone else who knew not GUILTY of covering up a crime? Foley at the LEAST was leading to the delinquency of a minor with his sexual talk about their jock strap, wanting to know if the boy was horny, and how he masturbated (in detail). Did Hastert know the exact details, along with Rodney whatshisface, the Congressman in LA???

Did the family feel it was RIGHT (!!!!) to allow Foley on in the Congress and say nothing? Are they Republican?

SHOULD I SEND THIS LETTER TO HASTERT?

Very upset you knew about Foley sickly saying these things to corrupt these young boys' and whatever else he did with his POWER (hate to wonder now!) over the young pages below him in the Congress.

Why were you complicit in covering up a scandal? How's there any justice in you keeping Rep. Mark Foley on in his duties after you knew he was trying to bugger young boys in the page program? This is quite disturbing to hear about. WHY WASN'T THIS PERVERT ASKED TO RESIGN OR FACE CHARGES? WAS IT BECAUSE OF HIS NEEDED VOTES? WHO CARES, YOU SHOULD'VE CAME DOWN HARD ON IT THEN.

Wasn't he on the committee protecting kids on the internet of ALL things?

Very sad. What a horrible decision, Speaker Hastert. This makes many people question why you would be complicit with allowing him to stay in his congressional seat.

These are the same people who criticized the media for not doing enough to get out the Clinton-intern story. Now they sat on the fact that one of their people was writing sexually suggestive letters to teenage boys. At least Monica Lewinsky was an adult.

will now acknowledge John Laesch, who is running against Hastert. It is a disgrace how they have ignored him here in Illinois 14. Because of Hastert's crooked land deal he has already lost favor among many in his flock and this new scandal could cook his goose.

The following shows the Mark Foley was still co-chairman of the
Missing and Exploited Children Caucus on 7/21/2006:

The FBI received a complaint two months ago.

When did Foley stop being co-chairman of this caucus?

It is disgusting that the republican leadership sat on this in the hopes of maintaining a seat and was willing to potentially put others at risk in the process for political gain.

It is equally disgusting if any democrats knew and sat on it waiting to release it at the "right time" potentially putting others at risk in the process for political gain.

Unfuckingbelievable.

(September 29, 2006 -- 10:11 PM EDT)

The story changes. Did Rep. Alexander (R-LA) report Rep. Foley (R-FL) to the NRCC, the House Republican campaign committee?

An NRCC spokesman says the matter was brought before the House Page Board. But it's not clear what they did about it.

Everybody's running for cover.

House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) told The Washington Post last night that he had learned this spring of some "contact" between Foley and a 16-year-old page. Boehner said he told House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), and that Hastert assured him "we're taking care of it."

Also, who are the opponents for the other House leasers:

Blunt (R-Mo),
Boehner (R-OH), etc.

And who's running against Alexander (R-La)?

Remember, Democrats need a net turnover of 15 seats currently held by Republicans.

_The congressional sponsor of the page, Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-La., said he was asked by the youth's parents not to pursue the matter, so he dropped it.

_Alexander said that before deciding to end his involvement, he passed on what he knew to the chairman of the House Republican campaign organization, Rep. Thomas Reynolds, R-N.Y. Reynolds' spokesman, Carl Forti, said the campaign chairman also took no action in deference to the parents' wishes.

98. Oops! Good catch! And, like Alexander(LA), Shimkus(IL), Boehner(OH), and
Hastert(OH), Reynolds(NY) represents a state where the Governor is likely to be a Democrat next year.

I recently realized that even the most furious media frenzy might take more than 38 days to build up a head of steam strong enough to have "resignation" on the lips of all the talking heads in the MSM. Any Republican worth his or her salt ought to be able to stonewall longer than that.

But, even if they are re-elected, should an Ethics Committee or Special Counsel report lead to their resignations, IIRC Governors will have much say in picking interim US Reps until the 2008 election or a Special Election. And all those governors are very likely to be Democrats!

Blanco's (LA) 4-year term began just three years ago;

Blagojevich (IL) leads Topinka by 10 points ( http://www.belleville.com/mld/belleville/news/state/15600132.htm );

Stickland (OH) leads Blackwell by 12 points ( http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060927/NEWS01/309270009 ); and

Spitzer (NY) leads Faso 72% - 21% ( http://www.newyorkbusiness.com/news.cms?id=14769 ), which would be the largest margin EVER in NY State!

The kinds of candidates parties put up against shoo-ins like the House leaders and most other incumbents tend to be "sacrificial lambs", political neophytes filling out their resumes. But all the Democratic opponents of these incumbents might have to do to help swing control of the House to Pelosi is show up! They might get lucky and win seats in DC their first times out. But even if they don't, they may be able to precipitate local media frenzies that will empower Democratic governors to appoint successors. Of course chances are Governors would choose Democrats other than those who ran and lost. Bad for them, but still good for Democrats!

See http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2267912 for a lot more on this topic.

Amazing. My irony meter is going of the Richter scale.

"Foley, as chairman of the Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus, had introduced legislation in July to protect children from exploitation by adults over the Internet. He also sponsored other legislation designed to protect minors from abuse and neglect."

It does not get much beter (worse) than that.

Rep. Dale Kildee (D-Mich.), who serves on the page board, was never told of the interview with Foley.

"I became aware of it this afternoon when came by my office. I think we should have had a page meeting right away," Kildee said, referring to last year's discovery of Foley's e-mails.

When asked if was upset about being excluded, Kildee said yes, adding, "I've been on the page board for 20 years."

Congress sees through party-colored glasses

By BILL ADAIR

© St. Petersburg Times, published September 12, 1998

WASHINGTON -- For more than a week, members of Congress said they would avoid partisan politics when they got Kenneth Starr's report on President Clinton. But when they finally saw it Friday, they split along party lines.
http://www.sptimes.com/Worldandnation/91298/Congress_sees_through.html
Republicans were aghast at Clinton's behavior, with many saying it showed he had lied and abused his power.

"It's vile," said Rep. Mark Foley, R-West Palm Beach. "It's more sad than anything else, to see someone with such potential throw it all down the drain because of a sexual addiction."

"Response to Hastert/Foley Pagegate Scandal, by John Laesch

Sat Sep 30, 2006 at 06:27:57 PM PDT

This is John Laesch, the Democratic candidate running against Dennis Hastert. Our campaign office reports that the phone has not stopped ringing all day and the Inbox on our e-mail account is exploding. We know that Dennis Hastert has been the "cover-up" guy for everything that is wrong in Washington. Hastert has been cleaning up messes all the way from this Wednesday's "get out of jail free" detainee bill that he gave to George Bush to gutting house ethics rules after Tom DeLay was indicted.

I am currently working with Danny Stover who is running against Shimkus in Illinois' 19th District ... This morning we held a press conference in St. Charles, IL and I basically said that it is time for Dennis Hastert to resign. If he does not do the honorable thing then voters should fire him on Nov. 7th. I started my speech with some of Hastert's own words from a 1998 press conference. "Even though our children may be at home with the doors locked," "that doesn't mean that they are safe. We must continue to be proactive in warding off pedophiles and other creeps who want to take advantage of our children...It's not infringing on liberties, it's about protecting our kids."

Apparently proactive in Washington means waiting 11 months... Exactly one month ago today Dennis Hastert made the front page of the Kane County Chronicle, a local paper, that covered Dennis Hastert's town hall forum on Internet safety. Protecting children is OK for Dennis Hastert when it is earning him votes, but he doesn't give a damn when it is a page working on Capital Hill. The fact that Hastert tried to cover this up is reason enough for him to resign. ..."
