They have shown no aptitude or stomach to fight so far when they were out of the majority (afraid of losing).

Won't they still be working under the same psychology if they are in the majority (afraid to lose the majority)?

This whole administration should be turned-over to the Hague. Do the Dems have the stomach to even come close to that?

At risk of sounding like Nader, what difference will it make? Will they be willing to put political capital on the line in opposition to the tyrant?

PS Feeling a bit negative today as if you couldn't tell...

1. I am worrying about winning Election Night only to lose the following
day to the "flippers". I could name members of both houses, that could go Independent the day after the election and side with the Repugs to give them control of each house.

23. I'm wondering about that myself. Just how many members, hiding...
behind the Republican majority, would be willing to "come out", so to speak, now that their stealth agenda is impossible.

2. There's no hope of a win in November. None. Forget about it.
There's no such thing as the Democratic Party anymore. It's a myth. They sold their souls today.

3. Man, you guys are more pessimistic than me...
but I think it is very legitimate to ask these questions of a party that's afraid to lose 'nothing'

The Dems have become a party of MeCrats... looking only towards reelection...

Lieberman as prime example

8. I think I agree with you and Frank Zappa.
The facade became more trouble than it was worth. They tossed it aside and the whole fascist machine is on display for anyone who cares to see it.

5. Sir, with all due respect and admiration for your views...
I cannot so easily condone the evisceration of the Constitution. And make no mistake, that is what happened today.

Any Congress willing to remove the habeas protection in the name of "national security" is criminal and not worthy of any of our support.

7. Do you honestly think that I in any way support this abomination?
I do not.

But, does that mean that we Democrats should give up?

What do you propose we do? We're on the same team here. I'm game for anything.

9. I do not think that, and did not mean to imply so. However,
I am having a hard time conjuring up some "party loyalty" to a party that is disloyal to the Constitution.

I too am open to suggestions.

10. I did not take it that way, MrCoffee.
I respect you and your opinions. But we're in an ideological war here. Our Representatives are our frontline soldiers. Unfortunately, they have no weaponry, no power in Congress. That's why they act the way they do. They see the issues, but they are truly powerless to stop things. There were not enough votes for cloture. That's why Reid made the deal, knowing fully well that the Dem amendments stood no chance to pass. The best he could do was to get things on the record.

We really have to stand together. We have to push even harder. We have to write more LTTE's, walk more precincts, give until it hurts.

I'm doing everything I can. I just don't want Democrats to give up. If that happens, we've given the Repukes precisely what they want.

Please don't play into the enemy's hand.

14. You have no weapons if you are afraid to use what you do have
The Dems have been afraid of losing their crust of bread. They have become part of the problem.

I am not suggesting there is a viable alternative (there isn't), but I throw up my hands in disgust...

11. They'll do nothing
Even if the Democrats win enough seats to hold a majority in both houses, they won't accomplish anything. Here's what I see happening:
1) RW talking points would still control the media and if the Dems try to set their own legislative agenda or anything else the majority party normally does, they'd get brow-beaten with bullshit accusations of 'playing politics at the expense of the American people' or some other talking point that vilifies them and can't be refuted in sound bytes. End result: Republican controlled Democratic majority.
2) They set an agenda and pass a good amount of quality legislation only to have it vetoed by *. When it gets sent back to congress, a significantly lessened amount of legislation will be enacted.
3) The set an agenda and pass a good amount of quality legislation and * signs it into law, but uses his favorite tool, the signing statement, rendering a significant amount useless from lack of enforcement.
4) They fail to set an agenda and pass quality legislation because of the sheer amounts of in-fighting similar to what happens on DU over just about anything.

13. The Dems win. The question is "what are WE gonna do about it?"
I can see protests, camping out in the offices of our elected Dems. We are going to do whatever we have to do to get our elected Dems to finally fight the fight, do what is right, and take this country back.

Whatever it takes. Within the law - unlike the repukes and a certain number of Dems.

As for those certain number of Dems, we need to vote them into office in November. Then we make sure that if they want to remain in office, they play by the Dem book. Or no more votes for them ever again.

15. What if 'Within the law' is the problem
Obviously, the repugs have interpreted and created laws to suit themselves...

I come back to this point: it's gonna take a second American Revolution and the fatass (no offense to the kg challenged) American Consumer isn't buying that product yet.

Can't say much more than that without getting a knock at the door. LOL?

But we're right on the same wavelength.

21. I am going to jump my pessimistic butt in here and say an important word
Edited on Fri Sep-29-06 06:59 AM by mtnester
VETO...unless we get enough of a majority to overturn a VETO, we will STILL be impotent until 2008. The in 2008, we have to not only hold one of the houses strongly, BUT we also have to have the WH. Better to have them all.

THAT is the long and short of it...we MUST start with what we have..as much as yesterday hurt me to the core, we could not STOP it no matter what....NOTHING was going to stop it, no amendment was going to be put into play, no real "compromise" was going to happen (even with the McCain kiss ass group).

The Democratic Party knew that, and decided upon a different strategy, as they HAD to, to put themselves in a position to mitigate. As it stands right now, every candidate, every elected DEM in office, could do NOTHING to stop this.

So, when Sherrod Brown stands next to Mike DeWine on MTP this Sunday, NO ONE can beat him up for one solid hour on this. Sherrod Brown will now be able to beat the living SHIT out of Mike on National TV for a solid hour, and mark my words he will do that, so that we in Ohio can GAIN one seat in the senate.

The only thing we can do right now is the ugly work-around until we get that bug patch from outraged voters in November.

The only way to get rid of the reprehensible stench in Washington is to hold your nose while you wade into the fray. It is what it is...the only tactical plan out there to save this country from COMPLETE and final horror.

Am I allowed to be angry and frustrated? You betcha, and it would be weird if you or I were not. However, it is not as much a reflection of a Dem candidate/Dem congress-critter if they had to vote for this obviously political and partisan maneuver designed as a Catch 22 by KKKarl Rove for the Dems, as it is a reflection of what that person had to do to help cleanse the vermin that are FAR worse. For that, I lay blame SQUARELY on The pResident, Dick "Target" Cheney, and KKKarl Rove. And yes, they have a lot of "tools" out there doing their jobs. The WORST offender, in my mind, for enabling this political orchestration, is MSM. They are doing more to help dismantle the Constitution than any single individual or group. MSM - the biggest tool of the destruction of our Democracy.

17. I understand feeling negative
How could one not? But it will make a difference. My Senator fought like hell over this vile legislation, and should we win, he'll be chair of the Judiciary. That and other chairmanships will make a powerful difference. Lots of the dem Senators are craven sheep, but they are sheep, and they'll follow strong leadership.

19. What makes anybody think that Dems will win in a landslide in November?
It ain't a done deal and there is a lot of chicken counting before they're hatched. I've seen an awful lot of strutting and posturing about how bad the Dems will be once they take over. It might be a better idea to actually retake either or both houses of Congress first. The reality is, far from being turned over to The Hague, Bush and his administration will not get what they deserve. Throughout history many did not get what they deserved, and many got what they did not deserve. If you are God, maybe you can sort it all out. In the meantime you can only do the best you can with what you have.

I've been saying so all along, and I refuse to rescind this statement.

If you think the Dems, as a whole, care about us, about the average American, you are seriously deluded. Read some Howard Zinn. Now.
