The abandonment of the writ of habeus corpus that the Republican Senate codified today is probably the most lasting assault on our principles under the Constitution and the rule of law seen in any of our lifetimes. That they were able to do that, with minimal intra party dissension, says much about the ethics of the Republican Party and this Administration. Lockstep to the sloganeering of the Administration has replaced oversight and responsibility in the majority party.
I am unabashedly a Democrat. The party needs our support to counter this beyond today's vote, which was largely a done deal and out of our purview to effectively block, legislatively. Sound and fury remains sound and fury when the votes get counted and the law gets signed.
There has to be a realistic and feasible opposition to the Republican agenda, which will be driven by the White House for the next two years and rubber stamped in a Republican Congress. We are that opposition. We're "it" in this political gambit, at this time and this place.
The Democratic party needs us now. Needs our criticisms, needs our input, and, yes, needs our support.
November 7th is an opportunity to level the playing field somewhat. I encourage us all to put our party in committee chairmanships via retaking a majority in one, or both, of the houses of Congress and challenging the extremist RW agenda in the parliamentary arena, while judicial review of the unconstitutional aspects of today's legislation(s) wend their way to the Supreme Court.
Just my two cents.
