4. Though not Muslim...
"When the fast ends (the first day of the month of Shawwal) it is celebrated for three days in a holiday called Id-al-Fitr (the Feast of Fast Breaking). Gifts are exchanged. Friends and family gather to pray in congregation and for large meals. In some cities fairs are held to celebrate the end of the Fast of Ramadan."

I am sure PsychoDad, ayeshahaqqiqa, or another informed Muslim DU'er will provide actual info and not just a blurb. :)

5. Eid al Fitr is the celebration
Edited on Sat Sep-23-06 05:34 AM by PsychoDad
At the end of the month of Ramadan. As Behind The Aegis mentioned, it's a 3 day holiday after a month of fasting.

On the morning of Eid there is a special prayer to mark the end of Ramadan, then the fun begins. A 3 day celebration. There are often parties and gift giving and children going from door to door for candies and money.

In some countries, it's quite a big deal. Much like Christmas in the US.

The other Eid, Eid al Adhar, is at the end of the Hajj season, and commemorates God's Intervention in Abraham's sacrifice of his son.

Peace :)
