TRIBUTES TO HENRY HYDE

Tributes to Henry Hyde

`When Henry Hyde begins to speak, you don't want to miss a word. You know you're going to hear something persuasive and moving, historically literate, intellectually honest.'

--Vice President Dick Cheney

`Henry Hyde stood by his principles (during the impeachment of President Bill Clinton) and eloquently demanded that the laws be followed.'

--House Speaker Dennis Hastert

`Like (Ronald) Reagan, he stood in the center of the conservative movement and was in touch with all parts of it. And he was steady. He never wavered.'

--Conservative activist Grover Norquist

`The polls were never in our favor. The chairman kept talking (during impeachment) about how we have to do the right thing. ... You may lose your seat, but you'll feel better knowing you did the right thing.'

--Longtime aide Tom Mooney

1. He called Clinton a "war monger" over al-Q
Yep.

Clinton wanted more money to fight terrorism. He had become "obsessed" that al-Qaeda was planning a series of audacious attacks on the USA -- a ruse, no doubt, to distract the country from the far more important business of investigating the misuse of his abominable man-parts. He requested a trivial amount of money by today's Bushian standards, but back in the 1990s, it was an unconscionably grandiose expenditure in the eyes of the GOP (and also Counterpunch, where I initially saw it, buried in an article weeping over Clinton's rape and murder of a million nuns and orphans).

It wasn't only Henry Hyde -- Trent Lott and Orrin Hatch also had a few choice irony-laden epithets for Clinton, in addition to accusing him of trying to grab our sacred guns. After all, there was a Peace Dividend to be spent, and the rich folks were chafing for their tax cuts. ("Baby needs a new pair of Rolls-Royces")

2. Henry Hyde, hypocritical crotch sniffer.

Isn't this the guy, who in the middle of the attack on Clinton for cheating on his wife, was found to have himself cheated on HIS wife?? Of course, Henry Hyde was in his 40's when he had his affair so it was different--I think the Repugs called it a "youthful indiscretion." Not nearly as serious as having an affair in your early 50's.
