Move to empanel Grand Jury in Muskogee Oklahoma re: Bush-Cheney crimes!
Edited on Wed Sep-13-06 09:51 AM by AndyA
(Cross posted from Oklahoma forum)

Covered in The Tulsa World yesterday:

Move for empanelment of a Grand Jury in Muskogee County, Oklahoma to investigate possible criminal activities of Bush-Cheney. This is a national petition of support, which anyone can sign.

By signing, you are sending a message to the Muskogee County Court and to the rest of the country that you support this effort to force impeachment of Bush and Cheney. A printed copy of this petition, along with the signatures collected, will be delivered to Muskogee County Court along with the actual Grand Jury Impanelment Petition, which must be signed only by residents of Muskogee County, Oklahoma.

http://www.bushbusiness.com/impeachment%20news.htm

Edit to add: The Tulsa World reports that this group has leased space in downtown Muskogee, and had over 400 signatures from Muskogee residents within the first few days, and I'm not certain how long they were open each day.

It's happening, folks. This is in the heart of RED COUNTRY - Muskogee, Oklahoma!

1. Does signing these on-line petitions ever result in any actual direct
...legal action? I have seen posters here on DU claim that they do nothing.

5. I don't know if they really help or not, but at this point can we afford
to overlook or disregard anything?

Who's to say that this isn't the one that will eventually bring Bush/Cheney down? You wouldn't expect such a thing from Oklahoma, but all it takes is a few people with determination and will, and this could be it, who knows...

29. Muskogee is the capital of the Muskogee (Creek) Nation
You wouldn't expect such a thing from Oklahoma in most of its regions, true, but in the capitals of the Tribes, the unexpected often happens. I'm signing! Gimme a pen!

28. That sounds like FEAR talking.
I'm signing the petition. The day I become so intimidated that I don't do what's right, is the day the terrorists win.

3. Oklahoma is generally Republic leaning, but the Dems seem to be
gaining some traction lately.

We have a Dem Governor, the Mayor of Tulsa is a Dem as well, so things may be changing, albeit slowly, but changing nonetheless.

11. You are apparently too young to remember the tune
Okie from Muskogee:
http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/haggard-merle/okie-from-muskogee-497.html

Or...Hippie from Olema...

Hippie from Olema

well i’m proud to be a hippie from olema
where we’re friendly to the squares and all the straights
we still take in strangers if they’re ragged
we can’t think of anyone to hate

we don’t watch commercials in olema
we don’t buy the plastic crap they sell
we still wear our hair long like folks used to
and we bathe often, therefore we don’t smell

well i’m proud to be a hippie from olema
where we’re friendly to the squares and all the straights
we still take in strangers if they’re ragged
we can’t think of anyone to hate

we don’t throw our beer cans on the highway
we don’t slide a man because he’s black
we don’t spill our oil out in the ocean
’cause we love birds and fish too much for that

and i’m proud to be a hippie from olema
where we’re friendly to the squares and all the straights
we still take in strangers if they’re Haggard
in olema, california, planet earth

8. more: says only OK an NM can have citizen initiated petions such as this:

http://www.bushbusiness.com/impeachment%20news.htm

.............
DATE: May 18, 2006

While the few state legislatures that thus far have been called upon by their citizenry to consider issuing a Bush-Cheney impeachment resolution take their sweet time in doing so, I have an alternate proposal:

As you probably know, only two states in the union have a constitutional provision allowing empanelment of a grand jury on the strength of the requisite number of petition signatories from the registered voters in a given county of the respective state.

One of these states is New Mexico; the other happens to be your state, Oklahoma.

Between now and the November 2006 election cycle, you and a handful of volunteer assistants have the opportunity to gather the several hundred signatures needed for presentment to the selected court-of-record there in your county -- a court that would have no recourse but to empanel the sought-for state grand jury to investigate, and report upon, the alleged criminal activity of Bush-Cheney (e.g., lying to the public re Iraqnam, and waging warrantless wiretapping of U. S. citizens on American soil). The resulting report could serve as an impetus for Congress to expedite its oversight power and investigatory role into how (and why) the Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld regime has undermined the governmental security and constitutional protections afforded Oklahomans and all other Americans.

Of course, the empaneled grand jury would have no authority to subpoena relevant testimony or other evidence from federal officials, but it could (and should) INVITE formal submission of such evidence. Presumably, this call for evidence would smoke out some additional whistleblowers as to official, presidential wrongdoing -- and facilitate "leakage" of incriminating, verifiable documentation........more.......

Apparently it's based on the total number of registered voters in the county.

I'm trying to get additional information - will post when I have it.

we have a bill pending in illinois, but it will take a significant drop in the temperature of hell for it to get out of committee.

edited to say that i think that these type of local action are great. impeachment coming out of DC would be greeted with a lot of skepticism. but the way it is bubbling up from the grassroots in so many places, i think, will truly shake the thugs.

See my journal or the link in my sig line. These guys have done better than I, but it's a state grand jury, I wonder if they can present findings to a federal grand jury?

22. Thanks for this post - it's personal for me
My dad was born in Muskogee and abandoned by his parents at a very young age. He came to CA at age 16 with what I gather was some sort of foster family. We always teased him about being an Okie from Muskogee and he would respond by telling us some day we'd be proud of Muskogee. He died in 2003 and so he never got to see this. He probably wouldn't agree with this action(he was a fiscal conservative in spite of his underpriveleged upbringing) but I'm feeling proud of his home now. Anybody that tried this in our red(neck) part of CA would suffer for it.

26. MUSKOGEE COUNTY IS MORE DEMOCRATIC THAN GOP!!!
Edited on Wed Sep-13-06 10:54 AM by AndyA
Article II Section 18 of the Oklahoma Constitution allows the collection of signatures to petition the court to order a Grand Jury be seated to hear evidence.

Oklahoma Statute 38 Section 101 says any person/group can circulate a petition to empanel a Grand Jury, to be filed with Court Clerk. A Judge verifies the petition is sufficient, then allows signatures to be obtained to actually seat the Grand Jury.

This really, truly could happen folks! Keep this kicked and let others know about it!
