We ARE the Media!
A Letter of Thanks,
from Nancy Greggs

Ever since I joined the DemocraticUnderground family, I have been impressed, time and again, with my fellow members’ ability not only to disseminate the news, accurately and in a timely fashion, but to put the wheels of true democracy in action and keep them moving.

Over the past few days, the reaction to ABC’s upcoming “Path to 9/11” has not only confirmed my initial assessment, but taken it to another level entirely.

IMHO (as we say around here), DU has run like a well-oiled machine, and puts to shame every cable and network newscast in the country.

Our On-The-Scene staff knows no peer. Posts have appeared within moments of breaking news; statements issued by ABC, Disney, Scholastic, et al, were made available, complete with attribution and links, literally within seconds of being released to the public.

Our Fact-Checkers posted the appropriate contacts – phone numbers, fax numbers, email addresses – with lightening speed, as well as pertinent historical information, such as Disney’s press releases when they declined to distribute “Fahrenheit 9/11”, as well as corporate relationships between ABC/Disney and their related companies.

Our In-the-Field personnel have checked in from around the country and beyond on a regular basis – “THIS just in from Ohio.” “Late-breaking developments in NYC” – with details on local aspects of what was being done, for or against the cause, and by whom.

Our Security Forces (a.k.a the Mods) have stepped in when arguments on the topic became heated but unproductive, and have gently but firmly reminded the over-zealous that conjecture and surmise do not equal facts.

Our Creative Department deserves singling out; threads were started at a staggering rate, as DUers came up with sensible and imaginative ideas as to who to contact, where and when, in order to make our voices heard. “Don’t forget Scholastic.” “Contact your local ABC affiliate.” “Call your district school board.”

Legal Affairs has kept us abreast of the litigation possibilities with respect to the FEC, the FCC, and probable grounds for lawsuits by Clinton and others, as well as the legal ramifications of every step taken by the major players in the story.

And I would be remiss if I did not mention our crack Comedy Relief team, who have managed to keep spirits high, and the activist sensibility focused through wit and humour, throughout every hour of every day.

Do we actually have such Departments and Teams? Of course not. But that is, as they say, the beauty part. Everyone has instinctively identified their strong points, found their niche, and applied their individual talents to contribute to an on-line news station that surpasses anything available in any other media.

So many people have contributed their talent and their time, and have done so not for recognition or reward, but out of a sense of patriotism and good citizenship. Defending democracy and changing the country for the better far outweighs all other rewards, and I honestly believe that my fellow DUers have done just that with their efforts.

When they hand out the Emmys next spring, no matter who walks off with the prize for Best News Program, we will all know the announced winner was just a pathetic also-ran compared to the Best News Program around – DU!

Our illustrious and industrious Admins may not get the Red Carpet treatment (which, on a happier note, will save them from being asked by Joan Rivers, “So EarlG, WHO are you wearing to tonight’s gala?”), but that in no way diminishes the fact they are the producers of the kind of news programming that the Big Guys just dream about.

So Congratulations, DemocraticUnderground! You guys are the ABSOLUTE BEST!

And now that I have said my piece – EVERYBODY BACK TO WORK!

What an INCREDIBLE PHOTOGRAPH!!! (Thanks for posting that!)

Just thought I'd put into words what I (and a lot of us, I would bet) have been thinking over the past few days. I have been absolutely BEDAZZLED by the incredible up-to-the-minute reporting that's been happening here.

I haven't watched TV or listened to the radio in days -- because I can get every detail of what's happening faster, and more accurately, right here.

I must sheepishly admit I am becoming addicted to the netroots. It is really, really giving me hope!

From the media.

DU is a damned good news aggregator, yeah. Like you, I know most stuff because I read it here before I got it from anywhere else. But DU isn't "the media."

12. Sorry, ain't nobody rainin' on my parade tonight.
Call it what you will, THIS site is what the real news media was supposed to be.

Opinions and editorial comment are labelled as just that -- they are not passed off as 'news'. The news that is gathered and presented on this site is always provided with links to the original source, the original speaker, the original author -- no one has to guess as to where something came from, and can read or watch complete background links to make their own assessment as to what credibility should be applied.

There are people out there who probably have a lot more interesting things to do with their time than research all of the email addresses for local ABC affiliates across the country -- but they do it anyway.

THIS is what it's all about. THIS is how democracy works.

Like I said, we have a great news aggregator here — in fact, I should've amended that to say we have a crack research team. I'm frequently amazed at the speed and thoroughness at which DUers come up with information.

But all the news posted here originated elsewhere. If it came from a blog, the chances are about 9 in 10 that the blogger got it from another source.

What galls me are the dozens of "TURN ON CNN NOW!!!" threads juxtaposed against "The media sucks!" If the media are so distorted, why do we rely on them so much?

... and usually it originates with a press release from someone, somewhere, who hopes their version of events will make it, unedited and unquestioned, to the airwaves.

And THAT, IMHO, is what's wrong with the current news media. No one checks the facts behind the story, or compares it to previous info from the same source.

DU is more than just a disseminator of what is out there -- the creative people here (who are legion) set out what they've learned, and make it applicable to an action that can be taken (e.g in this current story, Scholastic is involved here, so if you are unhappy with what's going on, why not contact THEM along with ABC, Disney, etc.)

I no longer rely on the MSM for the news, but only the head's-up that something is happening. If CNN announces that Bush just made a statement about torture policies, I immediately come to DU to find out exactly WHAT he said, why he said it, and find links to the background information behind the statement.

There is always something happening here -- the typical MSM stations run about ten minutes of actual news over a 24-hour period. Here, the news literally runs 24 hours a day -- no shit, no filler -- and you can take it or leave as your interests dictate.

I would say about half the stories are aggregated, posts of news articles. But there's an additional amount of news that comes from pouring over original source documents; speeches, military documents, congressional record, government reports, press releases, the list goes on and on. Not to mention some pretty danged good investigative bloggers, and even people like me who are willing to pipe up with aspects of stories that don't necessarily tow the left line, just for the pure sake of getting all the info out there. So I agree with the OP, there is no news source that beats DU, a helluva group of people here.

DU is the best news source I know. I stopped watching TV news years ago, and when I hear a news brief on the radio, one of my first thoughts is--I'll have to sign on when I get home and see what they're saying about this on DU.

It's turned me into a bit of a cynical bastard when it comes to anything that emerges from the Corporate Press. It cracked me up to listen to the newscasts on AAR and think how out of touch they sounded with the rest of the fare from that channel.

I'm currently engaged in an argument with a few guys on Gather about my "Leave Others Their Otherness" essay. They seem to think its tone is particularly harsh. I think it's emphatic, but not at all harsh.

Have you read that one?

Gather's going to get wild in the next few months, since they starting to advertise on TV. On FOX and CNN, of all places.

for shining the light of day on a corporate media that is losing validity with every slanted story it produces. I stopped watching TV news during the impeachment farce. DU is my first stop for news in the morning and last before retiring for the evening. The new motto for the corporate media should be "if it's news, it's news to us." DU and some other internet sites will render the corporate news obsolete before long, and rightly so. How many junk stories presented as news will it take before the viewers are completely turned off?
And a special thanks to you Nancy for the brilliant observations that you transform into verbal musings that are interesting, informative and thought provoking.
Also some loud applause for everyone here who makes sense in a sea of lunacy. I can't say how many times I've read something here and felt that at least I'm not the only one who sees what's happening to this nation.

I wish I was able to make more meaningful contributions, but I chalk up the quality of this site to diversity, tolerance, and open liberal minds. No matter what the topic, there is at least one person here who could be considered an expert on it.

"Groups." I use them to help me with my computer, lose weight, exercise, find cooking tips,etc.

When my sister asks me about this or that - I always answer "Let me ask" - and I find the answer on our very own DU!!

Nance, you always have the knack of putting things in the proper perspective. While we may lament the lack of importance given to certain issues by the MSM, DUers are able to grab the things which are important, and to dig until the facts are known.

What we do, we do because we love our country, and want America to be strong, and a place where every person has value, and is treated with respect. We do not do this for fame, or money, we do it for love of country, and our fellow citizens.

I went through the categories of things DUers do so well, the research, the fact checking, the humor, to keep things light, and they are all incredible. We also have an enormous cheering section, people who might not do well at research, or any of the other things, but who can see and appreciate the results, and give encouragement and appreciation.

I'm a relative newbie around these parts. But what I witnessed -- not only in the accuracy of the DUers on this issue but the speed of the change, was astounding to me. It was the first time in my adult life that I felt like I actually was involved in the political process in a affirmative way to bring about change. And that's saying something considering I first voted for George McGovern against Nixon in 72. With the ABC and Scholastic debacles both, I blasted off my 2 cents worth along with other DUers to castigate them on their stupidity and lo and behold something good happened! I am so glad I found you guys. We may have a chance yet to pull ourselves from the brink. And if we do, we can't let up! :-)

Well, could not we go further back in our time machine and ask:
What the hell did George Bush I do to stop Osama? I mean why not do that? He had the whole middle east in his grubby little hands back in 1991, so why not take Osama out right then either?

Now HERE is a concept for y'all,

It has struck me that this "non-issue" (really if you think about all the treason this admin is doing, this is a non-issue) is REALLY the DLC re-asserting itself as the controller of ALL things Democrat.
I mean it is all a Clinton (+administration) face saving thing that now supposedly ALL good Dems come to the aid of their "fearless leader." Well, it really is sapping our "momentum" on other more important issues, and the corporate controlled DLC KNOWS THAT.

So, I have stayed outside the blogosphere on this one, except for the few phone calls to ABC radio to gnash my teeth on the air, with the likes of Levin (the Zionist) and the new idiot (Jerry) last night taking over Laura Ingram's 8-10 slot in the NY ABC market.

Screw Disney and ABC, they were the next to fall to the nazis after Fox anyway, everyone knew that. I believe that ABC is also stirring the pot to get all good Dems back into the DLC fold, as Hilary was starting to get REALLY antsy at the calls to debate Tasini and with Lamont, and the Screw the DLC push happening as of late, I feel this is the motive for the over-hype of this non-issue.

This all just another Corporate-control of our sense of "what is important."

55. Why are you posting the EXACT same thing on every thread on 911?
We appreciate your justifiable distrust/hate of the DLC, but sometimes "a cigar is just a cigar", as we believe it is in this instance.

Say what you will, but we all miss the Clinton days GREATLY, and would GLADLY have them back/restored in a nanosecond!

God We miss Clinton...

these were some of my thoughts as well, but learning about the efforts on behalf of Clinton to actually end terrorism has been eye-opening. You might also be very careful of the "Zionist" label, unless you qualify it with "radical".
