Scholastic telephone number via TPM
.....the corporate offices of Scholastic are at 212-343-6400.....

TPM Reader DT on the ABC bamboozle and Scholastic ...

I think Scholastic may be the weak link here. Scholastic is in the business of teaching children -- and that requires that it present factual material. ABC will not readily pull The Path To 9/11 because it has advertised it so heavily and because it can pretend that its semi-fictional account is based on facts, etc. Also, I doubt ABC can reshoot made-up scenes between now and Sunday or find a replacement on its schedule. The best we may see from ABC is a more prominent display of the falsity of its docudrama.
Scholastic, on the other hand, does not have the same investment as ABC does in the program. It would not surprise me if Scholastic executives were unaware of the liberties that the docudrama takes with the facts. Scholastic will suffer much more reputational harm from teaching lies to children than ABC will from airing a "docudrama." We can already see that while abc.com still prominently advertises The Path To 9/11, Scholastic has, at least temporarily, scrubbed its site of 9/11 materials. The corporate offices of Scholastic are at 212-343-6400. (I note that a customer service representative offered me this number without prompting when I mentioned the 9/11 controversy, so I'm not handing out a number that Scholastic is hiding.)

If Scholastic pulls out of the project because the docudrama is inaccurate, that would increase pressure on ABC to admit that its program contains gross falsehoods.

This may be true. I would also say, though, that you get the names of the key advertisers with your local ABC affiliates and contact them, and you'll hear people squeal very quickly.

13. Here's mine:
Re: Path to 9-11
I am appalled that this company would attempt to propagandize school children with seriously inaccurate and slanderous lies regarding the lead up to 9-11. You do a profound disservice to our children and to the families of the 9-11 victims (who are STILL waiting for a truly independent and full investigation) by providing study guides to a seriously flawed documentary.

My children have been informed that if your material is presented in the classroom, they are to leave the room and refuse to participate.

You should have refused to participate in this debacle as well.

3. I've emailed them - here's what I wrote:
It has come to my attention that the film "Path to 9/11" due to air on ABC this Sunday/Monday evenings will be provided to public schools as an historical learning tool by your company. I have done some research on this "docudrama" and have found many blatant inaccuracies that contradict historical fact. I would like to know why Scholastic Books, a company with a fine reputation, would enter into a scheme to influence impressionable children with misinformation and lies about the most tragic event of our nation's history.

I have two children that attend the Northside Independent School District in San Antonio, the fifth largest school district in the state. I have purchased products from Scholastic Books since I was a child in elementary school. Make no mistake about it though - I, along with other concerned parents, will be contacting my school district and demanding a boycott of your company if you move ahead with distribution of "Path to 9/11".

This is a serious matter. I will not allow my children to be presented a piece of propoganda and told it is truth. I will not allow them to be the subjects in an experiment that is nothing more than the revision of history. I will not allow it to happen in my America. I sincerely hope you reconsider your decision.

4. That's brilliant--I was shorter and sweeter, but same tone
Scholastic is in the business of TEACHING children, not propagandizing them. Your sponsorship and association with the neocon agenda of ABC in pushing that fictional PATH TO 911 is nothing short of DISGRACEFUL. I will be contacting my local school superintendent and, with a cadre of concerned citizens, urge them to DISCONTINUE ASSOCIATION with your agency.

8. Let me tell you about Scholastic - I know I worked for them
I would post this in a stand alone thread, but my post count is not high enough to start threads. Among many things (treating workers very badly, low low low wages for all except managers, using mostly temp and most likely illegal immigrants, to keep wages low, I am talking about the warehouse here) they publish and push on our kids the most red, conservative bs masquerading as history. This is the not the first time they have slandered Clinton. Just a few examples.....

In the book fair division, Separate biographies are published for all Repub presidents, including Reagan and Bush, geared towards the youngest of readers. They are displayed prominently at the bookfairs and at the warehouse sales. No such biographies are published for any Democrat president.

They have several other books regarding presidents, some for younger and some for older (chapter) books. All of the books I examined talked of the "Clinton scandals", as in "the Clinton presidency was marred by scandals" and other very negative phrases. Reagen , on the other hand is treated like he is a god, no mention of scandals in anything written by him. No mention of contras, or anything else in the most scandal ridden presidency of our times.

I no longer work at Scholastic, otherwise i could walk up and down the isles of the warehouse picking out the subtle propaganda, all things (snarl sneer) Dem's bad, all things repub good.

12. the study/discussion guide has been removed
from the Scholastic web site URL where it was located yesterday. Looks like Scholastic is trying to hide it from parents' and other citizens' scrutiny. Too late! -- Janet
