a note from Iraq-- to me...
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 08:08 PM by TexasLawyer
I wanted to share the most beautiful thank you note I think I've ever received. It's from a US Army Sergeant in Iraq, for a care package that evidently came to the right place at the right time .

My co-workers and I decided this summer that we all had enough "stuff." Instead of celebrating birthdays and holidays with cake and treats and presents to one another, we're remembering people who really need to be remembered.

We put together care packages each month and send them to three different groups of soldiers serving in harm's way. None of the people in my office know any soldiers personally, but we find specific names, addresses, wish-lists and personal messages on the site "AnySoldier.com" (under the "Where to Send" button).

E-mails like this, from the recipients of one of our December care packages, make us realize that we're doing the right thing. I recommend sending military care packages to everyone else out there in DU-land.

I just received your gifts and considering everything that my Soldiers and I have been going through since arriving in theater I am without words for the first time in as long as I can remember. These present are truly gifts that will continue to inspire us throughout the remainder of this deployment and possibly throughout the rest of our lives. I realize that this war is something not every American is supporting and because of that we as Soldiers often carry the burden of being outcasts in our own society. So when I receive gifts, letters and kind words from loving citizens such as you it warms my heart and gives me hope that everything will be ok. So I thank you for the gifts and for bringing the Christmas spirit in a place that is filled with hate, negativity and sadness among so many young U.S Soldiers.

Please thank "The Energy Law team" for giving us the "energy" needed to live and fight another day. In addition to everything said, the Football may grant TEXAS a national championship and the Cowboys a much needed playoffs berth.

Thank you,

SGT W.

TexasLawyer again: A lot of our US soldiers are just kids Many are from broken homes and get little to no support from home. It feels good to help out.

SGT W. makes it sound like each of the people in my office coughed up a kidney for his soldiers, but really what we sent was not that great or that expensive. We all contributed some candy, Oreos, etc...; toiletries, stationary, puzzles and games from the dollar store; Sudoku puzzles and jokes printed off the internet (free!); used thriller/mystery novels ($.25 each from a resale shop!); dvd movies we had already watched; cards and poker chips; and so on. And we all signed a card that told these soldiers that they were not forgotten and that they and their families were all in our thoughts and prayers.

Mailing was inexpensive, too. The cost for mailing items to military APOs and FPOs is regular US domestic postage. The books and dvds were sent MediaMail-- a huge, heavy box for about $6.00. Everything else went in a "flat rate" box-- just $7.70 no matter how heavy. A letter costs $.37. (soon to be $.39).

I also send care packages by myself, but it has been nice to get the help and support of my co-workers. Now we all have a stake in getting these men and women back in one piece.

Merry Christmakwanzakah, y'all!

5. Texas Lawyer - Do you have to fill out forms when you send your packages?
I sent a box of canned food to a groups of soldier who can't eat the food the contractor serves them because they have been food poisoned in the past. I was in a rush to send out the box and forgot to check the restrictions. A few days ago I noticed a form is required. Now I am afraid they won't get the box. I am so mad at myself! Those poor guys...
