8/29/06 TO: University Faculty, Staff, and Students FROM: Philip E. Austin, President
I write with great sadness to let you know that one of our students, U.S. Marine Corporal Jordan Pierson, was killed last Friday while on active duty in Iraq. He was 21 years old. Jordan was a sophomore when he left for military duty in October 2005. He began his studies at UConn at the Avery Point campus in Fall 2003 andcame to Storrs in Fall 2004. During his time here he lived in Charter Oak Suites and later in Colt Hall.
He came to us from Milford, Connecticut, and graduated from Joseph A. Foran High School. He planned to return to UConn at the completion of his active duty. It is difficult to convey the sense of loss all of us feel at the death of a member of our community in this tragic conflict, but I know I speak for the entire University in conveying our deepest sympathy to Jordan's family and friends. We will let you know of any plans for a memorial service or other commemoration. The Dean of Students Office (Wilbur Cross Building, U-4062) will be happy to forward any messages of condolence to Jordan's family.
