Caught in a Net of Delusion
After Lebanon, Israel is Looking for More Wars


Late last month, a fortnight into Israel’s war against Lebanon, the Hebrew media published a story that passed observers by. Scientists in Haifa, according to the report, have developed a “missile-trapping” steel net that can shield buildings from rocket attacks. The Israeli government, it claimed , would be able to use the net to protect vital infrastructure -- oil refineries, hospitals, military installations, and public offices -- while private citizens could buy a net to protect their own homes.

The fact that the government and scientists are seriously investing their hopes in such schemes tells us more about Israel’s vision of the “new Middle East” than acres of analysis.

Certainly Israel’s leaders are not ready to examine the reasons for the rocket menace -- or to search for solutions other than of the missile-catching variety.

7. Funniest part of the movie.

Funny that people were frightened enough to want such a thing, funny that the media was exploitative (?) enough to give air time to that guy, funny that that guy was greedy enough to cash in on the scare, and the icing on the cake was the reaction on that poor woman's face when he blamed her for the stupid invention not working.

2. I'd sure like to see the original source of the story

Hebrew media ....."Scientists" in Haifa ...

Is the scientist cited a "government scientist?"

Or is this just some blowhard with an idea? Has the government endorsed this? Or are we required to take a leap that because some SCIENTIST says it is a good idea for the government, that the government somehow OWNS that thought...? And because some scientist says the government should buy this contraption, thus, that's your "proof" that Israel is warmongering?

You'd think, if it were such a hot idea, you'd see stories about it hither and yon.

I can't find shit about this story anywhere but this cite...and it's not like there's even ONE mention of the publication/s that featured this story in that article, which would make it a stronger read if they could come up with something other than, say, "Jewish Weekly World News, featuring the Hebrew Batboy" or something along those lines....and, not that this guy does not have every right to his opinion and his point of view, he is NOT a reporter, he's a commentator who backs a particular side in this conflict.

6. do you buy very, very big poles to hang

the nets on? Or just use supersize plant hangers screwed into the sky? Imagine how that would work with global warming, a bunch of shade nets, then it won't be long before someone hangs their laundry on a section and then the esthetics(?) of the world go in the dumper.
