Toby Keith a Democrat?
<Mr. Keith’s publicity agent, Elaine Schock, said his conservative reputation was a result of the times. He is a lifelong Democrat, Ms. Schock said, and the perception of him as conservative is a “myth.”

“I think when you have a war,” she said, “people want you to be on one side or the other.”>
More here http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/19/washington/19nashville.html?pagewanted=2&ei=5088&en=18f84d4844d735f7&ex=1313640000&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

This from the Saturday NYT - Democratic country singers getting the word out.

Unfortunately the writer calls Keith's song "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" "patriotic" rather than jingoistic.

29. Because Toby Keith apparently featured a fake photo of her and Saddam
Hussein during one of his concert tours after she said she hated that horrible song "Courtesy of the Red White and Blue" and thought it was ignorant.

She said that the FUTK meant something else, though.

8. He hasn't said anything in that regard
from what I can see.

But there is an interesting link in the article about other country singers who are speaking out. http://www.musicrowdemocrats.com/

20 songs, 20 bucks.

Like the UCC it looks like there are people out there who are trying to bring back the real America.

2. Toby Keith continually attacked the Dixie Chicks and wrapped himself in
God, Flag and Patriotism.... Courtesy of the Red White and Blue.... He "played" conservative to the hilt, sorry but I'm thinking his saying he is a lifelong Democrat is probably just a case of "buyers remorse" now that his boy bush ain't doing so well, and Iraq is so unpopular...

now it ain't only repuke POLs and talking heads who are distancing themselves from bush -

any of the assholes that encouraged the fascist regime AND attacked those that didn't.

Fuck every one of them. They have to do more than SAY they're really Dems after all.

They serve no purpose other than to fill their pocket books and that's what Toby Keith is doing here.

He's not foolng this hard ass Dem one bit.

i can assure you if we put our differences behind us, we can do something POSITIVE. If you want to remain down there hating and blaming you cannot and will not move forward, everyone can hear the hate in your voice, can see it in your eyes...you will not convince anyone your point of veiw is worth listening to. As a test, just try it......you will feel better. I am sick of feeling hopeless and hateful, it is not working for me. BTW, I feel SO much better.

35. Screw Toby Keith!
He was one of the chest pounders after 9/11. The Democrats didn't change. Wind vein entertainment/political hacks like him and Dennis Miller make me sick. They jumped on a band wagon of what they thought was a winning team. I say let them go down with the sinking ship. Songwriter Scott Emerick is the real talent behind 3 note vocal Toby Kieth anyway, and that's not sayng much. Screw em all on the right. I play w/ too many right wingers in bands and their all trying to find a way to say it wasn't their fault but they voted these jerks in. Now they're looking for a way to save face. The only thing Toby Keith/Scott Emerick can do to turn this around is a stright to the top platinum single apologizing to the world and cursing neo cons. Turds like the aforementioned and Ted Nugent (Used to like him before he opened his mouth)among others need to be neutered and humbled for their ignorance.

5. bullshit.. he sees the tide turning and wants to cover his ass
What he did to the Dixie Chicks is not what a Democrat acts like. He could have just kept his mouth shut if he didn't agree with them.

I know Willie Nelson may have had some influence with him but he needs to come clean then and not claim he's always been a Dem..

9. We have this debate about Toby Keith at work all the time.
Sadly I work with a bunch of dumbasses who think he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. I tell them he lost me when he Photoshopped pics of the Dixie Chicks hugging Saddam Hussein, and projected them on a backscreen during his concerts. I say that if you have to make up shit to prove some point, you're a no-class assclown and lower than whale shit.

13. He supported * in 2004
Some freakin' Democrat! Just another rat leaving a sinking ship.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toby_Keith

"Keith also had a public feud with the Dixie Chicks over the song, as well as comments they made from the stage about President George W. Bush. The lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, Natalie Maines, publicly stated that the song was "ignorant, and it makes country music sound ignorant."<1> Keith responded by belittling Maines' songwriting skills, and by displaying a backdrop at his concerts showing a doctored photo of Maines with Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.<2> On May 21, 2003, Maines wore a T-shirt with the letters FUTK on the front at the Academy of Country Music Awards. <3> While a spokesperson for the Dixie Chicks said that the acronym stood for "Friends United in Truth and Kindness", many including host Vince Gill took it to be a shot at Keith. In August 2003, Keith publicly declared he was done feuding with Maines 'because he's realized there are far more important things to concentrate on'.<4>

Keith considers himself "a conservative Democrat who is sometimes embarrassed for his party." He endorsed the re-election of President George W. Bush in 2004 and performed at a Dallas rally on the night before the election."

32. I heard him address this in an interview once...
Maybe on Larry King?

Anyhoo, he said (paraphrasing) his father was a loyal democrat, but that back before democrats "changed." He didn't specifically mention what party he belonged to, but left the view with the impression that New Democrats did not represent him and his ideals/values, like they did in the old days. So whether that means he is a republican or a Zell MIller-esque Dem, he's still wrong. Ha!

37. That's very telling
I could see how a democrat MIGHT be tempted to give to a republican candidate, very occationally, if that candidate better represented his/her viewpoint on something, but I can't see why any democrat would EVER EVER EVER give to the RNC, which will basically use the money to help elect republicans.

He's made two contributions, one to Bush and one to the RNC (see my link above to newsmeat.com)

I see from several sources that he claims to be a Democrat but often feels embarrassed by the Democratic Party. He openly admits he supported Bush for el pretzeldente.

a generation ago, liberal and conservative were separate criteria from party affiliation. We had conservative Democrats and liberal Democrats. We had both conservative and liberal Repukes.

TK comes from the rural southern conservative Democratic tradition. Kudos to him for not becoming a Reagan Democrat.
