Face-off over water quality rules

By Kim McGuire
Denver Post Staff Writer

In what promises to be one of the biggest showdowns over water quality in the new year, a state commission will decide next week whether it should continue to regulate stormwater runoff from oil and gas wells.

Driving the conflict is a set of controversial new rules the state water-quality control commission adopted in March that require oil and gas operators to get an erosion-control permit for wells on sites of 1 to 5 acres.

In doing so, Colorado became one of the first states in the nation to try to control contamination and prevent erosion at oil and gas sites under construction.

The commission, however, is set to reconsider those rules on Jan. 9 because of language in the 2005 energy bill that gives the oil and gas industry a free pass on several provisions of the Clean Water Act, including controlling stormwater runoff.

1. Is Colorado a Red State?
Maybe that's the color of contaminated drinking water.

2. Used to be that Colorado was red, but Denver was blue and more
people lived in Denver than the rest of the state so CO went blue. That's all changed now and it appears that the state is pretty red.
