Rabid horse dies. Owners and stable workers being treated. (S.C.)
A Simpsonville couple is undergoing treatment after state health officials confirmed that their miniature horse had rabies.

Two workers who came into contact with the horse at the Cleveland Park East area farm also are being treated, according to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.

DHEC officials confirmed on Thursday that the horse, which died Tuesday, was in fact rabid. (more ..)

That's a new one on me. Evidently equine rabies is a problem and horses do get rabies vaccinations. The article doesn't say whether or not the owners and stable workers who are being treated for rabies were bitten by the horse.

rabies vaccine. I know a lot of people do not do this but since I am just above the river valley and rabies is pretty frequent in the near area I just do it every year. It is a pain in the ass because it, as well as West Nile require a veterinarian to do it so it does cost a bit more than if I could do it myself.

I can't imagine not doing it, especially if rabies occurs in your area.

Edit for spelling

4. Rabies in horses- there is a vaccination, but rarely do
people innoculate them. Rabid horses get lethargic, not vicious. Probably because dehydration effects them so quickly, and stops their motor functions. Staggering, falls and goes into a coma swiftly
