Granted, I've only seem him a few times, but he just doesn't make me laugh. I like what he is saying, but he is missing something.

Is it just me?

132. About that...
Colbert joking about the president seemed a bit funny at first. Yet, he overdid it. He overdid it so bad, it makes you think whether Bush should have been concerned at all; I came to a conclusion that that's exactly what the Bush administration wanted it to look like. Bush is a very easy-going guy, having this guy bash him out completely and he's just sitting there laughing about it as if it was nothing (and then makes you want to think, yea maybe it was nothing) so to boost Bush's popularity level amongst people that aren't so much into politics but just don't like Bush because he's a dumbfuck that's all about war, but then when they see Bush extremely free-spirited and takes things easily, hey maybe he's not such a bad guy after all? You think Colbert could have gotten away with what he siad without consulting with Bush and his Okay beforehand? I mean come on now, he was "invited". Surely the whole thing was planned out which did not make it look as funny.

47. Actually, I find Colbert to be more subtle and incisive
than Stewart is anymore. The irony on the Daily Show is usually more obvious than it is on Colbert (to me anyway). While the loud, grating nature of his character is part of the schtick, I can understand how you might find that annoying. Chappell is that way for me.

It's odd how individualized humor is--I guess it's just a matter of opinion in the end.

Colbert is too grating, too over the top. I agree with him. I think much of what he does is brilliant satire, it's just that I can't stand watch him.

His character is supposed to represent the prototype republican
That's where the satire begins. The brilliance is that the republican views that he trumpets make such good comedy on their face. The funny thing is the republicans who cheer him on sometimes in the audience have no clue that he's lampooning them.

141. Irony is hard to grasp....

I've said before that I'm surprised so many Americans find him funny. Because so much of American life is so completely 'over-the-top', exaggeration without irony, isn't funny. Too many Americans can't even see the exaggeration, so they miss the irony and the humour.

It's obvious that Colbert is trying to entertain liberals. Pretending to be a super-patriot, unable to see his own prejudices, he takes this personality to his guests (who always amaze me with just being there) and tries to draw out their prejudices, by pretending to agree with them.

Anyway, irony is even harder to explain....

144. The Word is my FAVORITE
Usually on everyone of those thing I laugh till I cry. I love Stephen and I actually think in some ways he is funnier than Jon - but I actually love them both. Anyone who bashes these pigs makes me very happy...keep watching he might grow on you.

Also I'm not completely sure that some of the stuff he does is meant to make us laugh but to think!!! For example he had some freak on last night who wrote a book called the Dems the party of death - and Stephen said yes the Dems party that wants to raise the minum wage, provide health care and something else I can see why you would consider them the party of death - which isn't particularly funny but man did it make this FERAK LOOK LIKE A COMPLETE IDIOT which is just what he is.

Oh the other thing he does and I don't even know the origins of it but when he starts in about bears I have at times almost laughed myself off the couch!!!!

Maybe I didn't get the sarcasm at first. Once I saw the White House Correspondents Dinner it all clicked for me.

I don't find him hillarious, laugh out loud, roll on the floor funny. I think that's what I was expeceting and was disappointed when it wasn't there. But he is subtle beyond belief - sometimes not so subtle - and the sarcasm is what is funny for me now.

22. You have to understand that he's just playing a character.
He's the typical Republican Kool Aid drinker, making a fool out of himself and his party. He has a huge ego, talks big, thinks he's right and everybody else is wrong, unless they agree with him, and you have to realize it's very heavy satire.

It's not the kind of show where you can not think much about what is being said, because the humor is at the surface, like one of Kathy Griffin's shows. Kathy is hilarious and you know where she's coming from and can understand the humor easily.

For Colbert, you have to think a little bit about what is being said, there are often messages hidden in the heavy satire that you are likely to miss if you don't pay attention. I don't think The Colbert Report is a show you can just sit and watch and understand, you have to be alert and think about what is being said.

I think he's very funny, but sometimes I find his persona a bit irritating, just like the personalities of so many Republicans.

27. I'm not that wild about his show
I think Colbert is a goddam comic genius; my favorite stuff of his came when he did "Strangers with Candy" and "The State." His schtick on this new show has worn on me a bit, and I admit to not really watching it anymore. That having been said, I thought his stand-up at the Correspondents' Dinner was spectacular.

I am hopeful that devotees of Colbert do not attempt to establish the premise that one has to like him to be politically acceptable. Humor is something each person has to find on their own. If you're not finding it with Colbert, you are not alone and shouldn't be zapped for it.

52. Please try this: for a week TIVO the show (or just tune in 5 minutes late)
and just watch a segment Colbert has almost every night called "The Word." When "The Word" is over, just turn the program off.

If you spend just five minutes a day for a week (actually only four days because The Colbert Show is only on Monday through Thursday), watching "The Word" will assure you that Colbert is NOT a one-joke show. Calling Colbert a one-joke show is like calling the New York Times a one-issue paper because every edition is printed in blAck and white, but just as you know better than to judge the NYT by the type font or the color of its paper and ink, you ought not judge Colbert exclusively by his format.

I PROMISE -- IF YOU WATCH "THE WORD" FOR FOUR CONSECUTIVE DAYS IN THE NEAR FUTURE AND YOU STILL THINK COLBERT IS A ONE-JOKE SHOW AFTER THAT EXPERIMENT, I WILL BUY YOU A CHERRY SODA. NOW, YOU WON'T GET A BETTER OFFER THAN THAT FROM ANYONE.

78. It has recently gotten a bit sharper and "The Word" has gotten even better
and has focused on some very significant issues.

If you can find it, watch "The Word" segment after the Lamont-Lieberman election. In my opinion, it was the best five minutes of analysis on the election I saw all week (it very effectively debunked the notion that Lamont is out-of-the-mainstream and also debunked the idea that Lieberman serves the voters by ignoring their votes against him).

Besides, how can you pass on the opportunity to get a cherry soda?

88. That's the part I dislike the most. If he did "the word" without all of
blinking props, I would like it. By putting up all of the commentary, he's saying to his audience that they don't get it unless he tells them what he's really saying. I find it offensive.

Of course, it was based on one person I know who doesn't like either, and I like both (though I don't have tv and only catch clips of Colbert, but I think he's awesome).

I figured that what Seinfeld and Colbert have in common is irony... but I guess from responses here there's more to it than that!

Colbert is occasionally funny, sometimes it needs a little spice as the same old shtick can bore me.

His interviews make me squirm as he interupts like O'Liely, but in an awkward way that can ruin a good point being made by the guest.

Sarcastic, yes, good satire, yes, but funny, no. I get an occasional laugh but not often. Rather like the Correspondents dinner, it was not funny. It was caustic, it was biting, it was not funny. He's too over the top, makes me uncomfortable. Not because I don't agree with the sentiment, but because he is so grating. Can't watch Fox either.

He hits a great note here and there, but if I want to laugh I'll tune into a professional comedian that hits notes over and over.

and yes some of his bits are funny, especially "The Word". That's all you can ask of comedy. My general rule of thumb is that a really good comedian will get you laughing at about one-third of their jokes. Skit shows are less than that - one or two funny skits in a half-hour show is good work. Colbert does that. He's also quick on his feet extemporaneously, like in his interviews.

The best thing about him is he puts the inherent absurdity of Republicanism right where it belongs. Republicanism is satire in itself. Of politics, of attitudes, of decency, of Christianity, of thought. Colbert does that spot-on. I don't know how he stays in character. Anyone who understands what these people are all about - any one of us or any other comedian you know - we'd be suppressing grins and failing not to crack up like a Carol Burnette skit with Carol, Harvey, Tim and Vicky trying their hardest to hold it together and not. That was hilarious. Colbert's schtick isn't hard-laugh stuff, it's grin and smirk material with occasional lols. Take it for what it has to be.

I consider him a public service. If Republicanism was treated as the sick absurdity that it is in this world, instead of respected and lionized by the betrayers of human decency that American journalism has become, Colbert's deadpan parody would be moot. Unfortunately it's left to the comedians to do what journalism has failed at doing in the most sad and depraved way. When he's funny, it's just extra points.

She gets his schtick, but the fake egomaniac thing puts her off. I think he's funny as hell.

120. Sometimes his humor is well defined, not funny to everyone.
Sometimes he will miss a beat or stumble over words, but for the most I think he is brilliant. Maybe
smarter than funny at times.

122. I enjoy both Colbert and Jon Stewart.
The Daily Show is really funny material. Colbert's persona is hilarious, I think. I can't help it, but I have a crush on Steven Colbert. :loveya:

Each time I watch it I laugh more. It was one of the goddamn absolute witty, brilliant and direct humor I've seen from any comedian period.

126. I love him AND think he's hysterically funny - Neil Young on Thursday btw
The Daily Show and the Colbert Report are really the only things I watch on tv anymore (unless it's football season). Last night, both shows had me laughing out loud, sitting all by myself. When he put "Geraldo's mustache" on Jon Stewart, I almost lost it.

I never knew who Colbert was until I watched the WH Correspondents dinner, and it was love at first sight. I haven't missed a show since. He's not always laugh-out-loud funny, but I love satire as well. And, he makes me think.

I think you have to be fairly well informed, and also enjoy satire and sarcasm to like him. I'm pretty sure my husband wouldn't care for him (he's never seen the show), as he has no interest in politics, and doesn't really like sarcasm all that much.

He does have an occasional off-night and some things about the show I find a bit silly, but they're really a very small part of the show - and he's satirizing O'reilly, who I've never actually watched, and I believe he gets that stuff from O'reilly.

I just love the guy. He makes the repubs look like the idiots they are, and they STILL go on his show. Sometimes, I've noticed, he drops his character, like when Ned Lamont was on - he basically just let Lamont talk, and dedicated several shows to making fun of Lieberman.

I think people just like different types of humor. Although, I don't think one or two shows are enough, especially if you've caught him on an off-night. I think of the Daily Show and the Colbert Report as one show, and I'd be lost without them!

If you don't think he's funny, then you we will don't want you voting Democratic

:sarcasm:

Seriously though. I find him pretty funny, however I can certainly understand folks who don't enjoy that type of humor. My parents don't get Colbert at all, and they are about as die-hard Democrats as one may find.

Nonethless, expressing anti-Colbert opinions is not something that folks around here appreciate.

It's not the time to entertain a "pity party" just because you're clearly in the minority.

However, unlike right wing Gestapo boards, we won't DISOWN you. Gee, touchy touchy and shocking that you would not expect far more positives ... perhaps there's a Little Green Monster hiding underneath the covers for some?

152. BEARS!!!....AAaaaahhHH!
I think Colbert also operates at varying levels of subtlety. I think there are things that many people miss that are obvious to others.

Consider his preoccupation with bears (those godless killing machines). I thought it was funny at first but soon lost its appeal to me. Every week he would include some mention of how bad bears are for America (usually in the Threatdown). But, he also describes one person affectionately as "Papa bear." That person is Bill O'Reilly. I have a feeling this is not coincidental. To me, this implication, that Bill O'Reilly is the biggest threat to America, put the humor of the show on a whole different level.

153. We're everyone endowed with a unique sense of humor. You
don't "get" the kind of humor Steven Colbert revels in, i.e. satire, dry wit, sarcasm, facetious, tongue-in-cheek. I don't get the 3 Stooges. I wanted to but they just seemed silly and mean to me. I'm sure there are lots out there that are just as perplexed as you are when it comes to Steven's humor. But that's ok, y'know. It's only a TeeVee show. Enjoy what you can and skip the rest.

I love Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. They do different kinds of satire, and they both do it very well. I'd suggest fiving Colbert a few more tries. If you don't like it, you don't like it ... It'd be too bad, because you'd missing something I think is great, but I'd still respect you in the morning!

Not everyone is the same. I sometimes find him funny. It's not nearly as much as everyone else. Once in a while, a thread will go on about a particular bit and I'll tune in to the repeat.

I prefer TDS over Colbert, anyway.

You're not alone in this :)

Regrets because IMO he's a comedic genius and in character (Cobert, it's French!) he reflects a hilarious caricature of everything that is asinine about Our Right Wing Wackos. Many members of my family and aquaintences are "standing out" in his skits.

164. I love the Colbert Report
Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 06:10 AM by MagickMuffin
Watch it every time it airs. I really love his character. The only thing that makes me upset (if you want to call it that) is sometimes he interrupts his guest to much, other than that I enjoy almost every segment he does. I think he is better at what he does than Jon Stewart.

Having said that let me explain why Stewart drives me crazy. Jon does a disservice the way he portrays the democrats, and how he sometimes coddles the repubs, and what I mean by that is usually he will give the repubs more time on the interview segments. He doesn't ever do that for the liberal side of the debate. Like when he had Newt on the show he allowed him two segments. I don't remember Kerry getting two segments, and he was running for one of the most important jobs in America. He doesn't always come off as a non-partisan. IMHO:evilgrin:

I still watch TDS, I find it still funny. I just wish Jon would show a little more respect to the Democratic Party.

I think if you give him some more viewing you may come around to his sense of style. If not then no big deal. Not everyone has to enjoy the same things. That's what makes humans unique!
