So seriously, how much cable news do you watch each day?

Keith Olberman doesn't count - we all watch him. He's the only thing I can watch on all 3 of the major cable news networks combined (CNN, MSNBC and FOX).

So my questions to you are this:

1.) Do you watch cable news on a daily basis (excluding Olberman)
2.) What cable news channel do you prefer?
3.) If you don't watch - where do you get your news from?

90% of my TV viewing time is spent watching CNN. :( Sorry, it's like watching a train wreck...I just can't help myself.

4. Well...

I don't really watch Olbermann that much; I appreciate his point of view, but usually there are other non-news shows on at 8pm that I like to watch, plus I just really can't get into some of the theatrics on his show. I really like his interviews with political people, but I don't like the sideshow stuff, I don't like his interviews with comedic types, and I can't stand when he covers baseball.

(1) Yes, I watch cable news off and on throughout the day. I would say on average, maybe ... 2ish hrs. Usually 30 minutes to 1hr of Matthews, then I catch snippets here and there on the other networks. I would watch Larry King more, but it seems he's only been covering the Israel/Hezbollah thing over the past month, and I just can't take that night after night.

(2) CNN for "real news," and MSNBC for news as entertainment.

(3) I probably get most of my news from the internet. Usually I'll read stuff that is breaking here on DU, then check the broadcast news stations if it is an interesting enough story to see how they are covering it.

5. I only have basic cable, so there really is

no news channel except Channel 14News and it's local. I get my news on blogs, Yahoo, and most importantly, here on DU, to be honest about it.

6. I watch some CNN when I get home from work

Mainly for Jack Cafferty and Lou Dobbs, and spend maybe a half hour at most watching.

7. I watch very little TV news, cable or otherwise

First, I don't have the time, between my regular day job, and getting my orchard/farm up and running I generally work from sunup to sundown. Secondly, when I do watch TV news, I just feel like I've opened my skull and am letting the propaganda flow in. Not a good feeling.

Generally I get my news from the radio(NPR), the 'net(read several sources extensively on line), and a few magazines that I receive monthly, like Mother Jones.

About the only news that I watch on television is the local news, mainly to catch the weather report. Once in a great while I'll switch on the tube, just to see what bullshit they're feeding the masses. But for the most part, in this era of corporate controlled media, I stay away from the MSM TV news like the plague. You put garbage in, you're going to get garbage out, witness Faux news viewers:eyes:

1. None, INCLUDING Keith Olberman. I don't have a clue who he is, other than he's someone you can hear talking on the media somewhere, because his name pops up frequently here.

2. I don't prefer any cable news channels. I don't watch any tv news. The last time I had my tv turned to a news channel, it was satellite. I was there because my son called me and said, "Mom, TURN THE NEWS ON NOW. DON'T ARGUE." I turned it on, and didn't have to look for news. It was on every station. I watched the reports on the WTC bombing for about 15 minutes, and then turned it off. Permanently.

3. I get local news from my local newspaper. The rest I get from my google news homepage, and from checking in online with some metropolitan newspapers and various news sources outside the U.S..

and it's not any one network - it's local TV news in general. I watch it mainly to get the weather. All my world and US news I get from online. Then I compare that with what our Gannett-run local paper says.

I listen to NPR (but, less and less all the time).

I click through to news stories on DU-LBN, I check Yahoo for news, and I have google and yahoo alerts for stories about subjects in which I'm interested.

I also listen to a half-dozen podcasts for news, including the BBC news roundup, FAIR's weekly CounterSpin, and a couple others.

I watch my local news on TV, but that's it.

Otherwise, pretty close to none, mostly because I the short period I do watch, I don't find very useful, informative or illuminating. I get most of my news reporting from the internet. I watch ABCNews and an hour or so of the local news.

... for more than 5 minutes at a time --- just to see what the subject matter is. The anchors annoy the hell out of me.

I do watch Jim Lehrer's NewsHour every day. It is the most balanced and informative news show out there. Plus, the amount of time given to each segment allows them to explore the issues in a deeper way than the puffball skimover given by CNN, MSNBC etc.

I watch Keith --- but have to say that I'm totally uninterested in his celebrity/sports/oddball segments and usually change the channel when they come on.

When i'm not working! I watch Lou Dobbs while eating supper, i watch KO, i do believe the second half of his show is a waste of good air time that could be used for informing the public.

Mostly DU and a little PBS, and Jon Stewart for comedy relief. Oh! and BBC world news, thats it for me.

Seriously, I have all cable news filtered out of my favorite channels list on my cable box. Occassionally I flip by a channel just out of curiousity wondering what the latest propaganda is. I last about 30 seconds. Lies, Bloody Lies.

23. Every now and then while flipping through the channels

I'll settle on msnbc for about thirty seconds, then on to something else. I've blocked out cnn and faux long time gone now. I get most of my news right here following the links, and discussions. I watch nbc national just to see what they're covering and find that they're way behind the curve on their coverage, most of what they report on has been discussed here at DU in depth and we've moved on already, mostly I watch just to see how they cover things.
I watch the KC news because they are more professional in their coverage than the mickey mouse local station just down the road. For local news I'll hold my nose and read the local very heavy reptilian paper, but only for the opinions, obits, and comics.

and i get all the grey and blue colours, and better sound
without using an idiot box!

A good example: I tried to watch the press conference with Joe and Valerie Wilson a few weeks ago. I was unable to hear most of what was said because CNN and MSNBC were too busy telling me how I should feel about what was being said, and stepping all over those speaking as well.

I watch CNN if I have no other choice.

I get my news from the Web, Keith Olbermann and the staggeringly brilliant "Daily Show".

Weekends the NY Times.

I HATE TV, especially tv news. If there are good shows (like Lost) I get them from Netflicks.

other international news programs, and of course some local news. Mostly I read news on the Internet from various world sources.

Oh, as for cable news - NONE. Or, I should say only when held captive...

And I listen to NPR. That's about it. The rest, I read online usually. For one thing, cable news and network news have way too many commercials to keep my interest.

36. I detoxed from cable news Dec. 2004.

It was one of the best things I've done. For me, cable news was a source of real frustration. I ended up pissed off every time I watched it because it's not really even news and it's biased and it's misleading. I blame the media in part for Gore's loss in 2000. I blame the media for what they did to Dean. I blame them for glossing over details and not reporting the facts when it comes to the Bush administration. I blame them for sensationalizing Natalie Holloway, the shark attacks, and the Terri Schaivo issue, to name just three, and for dumbing down the news altogether.

I get 90% of my news from the LBN section here.

I watch Countdown and The Daily Show and The Colbert Report regularly (yes, the latter two are supposed to be comedy, but often display more news content than CNN) and I listen to NPR and read some news online.

The only cable news I watch is C-Span, BBC and Mosaic on LinkTV. I also watch Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert for my fake news, which is more factual that the real news on the big three news' channels on cable.

Mostly I get my news listening to AAR, reading DU, then I follow the links to printed media on the internet.

I used to drive down to get the LA Times every day but when they were sold out to Rwingers, I stopped doing that.
