What do we do?
They own the media, they own the voting machines, they've got the white house, congress, and they're about to have the supreme courts. They're gaining rapid ground in the courts on every level. They can tap our phones, read our emails, and see all of our searches with no oversight. They can sic the IRS on anyone they please.

They take pictures of people at protests, and declare them a threat worthy of surveillance. They ruin the careers and denigrate anyone who speaks out against them. Of the democrats who still have some power, a substantial number seem to share many of their goals, or are afraid to risk their political careers to say anything.

I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it. When people say "history will judge these people harshly", they don't seem to get, that they're figuring out how to control the history books.

What can we do? What are our options? Our nation has been kidnapped by the mob. How do we save her?

3. I suggest the Dems take a page out of Reagan's play book.
Do you remember how well the comment "Are you better off today than you were 4 years ago?" resonated with the public? I DO!

I think that's the tactic the Dems should take, and keep hammering it home! Of course they have to add what they're going to do to fix it, and bring things back to te days everyone remembers. People feeling worse off coupled with all the Pub scandals should do it!

4. The Gore speech was great, but the hope didn't last long enough
I'm getting depressed now-I don't have any answers for you.
One thing I can say, is that I call, email, and talk to friends/family, senators, TV shows, any time I think it will help (sometimes unwanted) because I want to be able to say I did everything I could to prevent the killing of our democracy.
Maybe we could boycott specific products/companies that own the media (one of the 5).

5. It may be
It may be that it has to get alot worse before enough people realize the truth of what's happening. The real damage was done when we lost the 'fourth estate', the media; for without them, many people will have to directly and personally experience the results of the damaging actions of those in power now, before they will believe.

In the meantime, there are ways to oppose each and every encroachment by these wealth & power mad individuals; they may be imperfect and far from totally effective responses, but they're something nonetheless.

In the end, though, even under the worst case... Never give up; they can't win forever.

6. I can't believe that in 2006 we're really talking about
imposing martial law on regions of the country. When Mike Brown "apologized" yesterday, his aim seemed to be to say that we should impose martial law as soon as the next disaster hits.

On top of that, all this OBL stuff, the wiretapping issues in the news, calls for google searches, seems like a set up. I really fear they'll let another attack happen just to say "I told you so" to all the liberals, and plunge the final stake in the heart of this country. People are blindly giving up their rights and welcoming a police state, en masse. Imagine what will happen after all this controversy if another attack occurs.

I fear the worst case scenarios are being eclipsed, and there's nothing we can do. It's like the same 33% of the country is on to what's going on, but we just don't have enough numbers to counteract all their power. I'm afraid we're going to be missing the '90s for the rest of our lives.

But you've yet to say it here until now. :)

But that is NOT a bad thing.

Welcome to DU, my friend.

Whether new to DU or old, it is time that we all face the reality of the true danger we are facing.

And NEVER Give Up The Fight.

Be Strong. Don't Lose Hope.

9. Read and teach... Our only defense is to arm ourselves with...
Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 01:38 AM by mikelewis
knowledge and lead the sheep out of ignorance with reason. If you're looking for a quick fix, there isn't one. It starts with you learning the truth and passing it along to your neighbors. You have to learn how to teach them without offending and guide them without pushing them. If you are not reserved to a life long uphill climb, you're going to be very upset for a long time. We have come a long way in a short time but the enemy is very crafty and patient. You are witnessing the schemes that are 20 years in the making; they will not be undone overnight.

You must become a leader in your community. You know the danger we face. You know the future that is marching lock step toward us. If you don't save your neighbors, who will. Even if they laugh at you, mock you, beat you, they will eventually follow you. You don't have to run your city or state. You can start with something as easy as a neighborhood block watch. Help them to start looking out for each other. Tell them you're going to keep it going with a monthly newsletter. Tell them you'll collect relevant news of the community and pass it along through e-mail. If they don't have a computer, print out the news and drop it off to them. Always include a relevant speech or news item that tells them about the true danger we face but do not I repeat, do not use scare tactics. Talk about relevant Republican scandals or special speeches by your favorite Senator or Congressperson. {I have printed up close to 40 copies of Al Gore's speech and I still have more I have to deliver along with the news of my community.}

Even if you don't do something like this, you can always join an organization like the Democracy for America meet-up groups or the Democratic party. You don't have to do anything you don't feel comfortable with but the second you start to do something, the task doesn't seem so insurmountable. We can beat Bush and we can fight back the demons that speak through him. To do this, we must re-create America the way we want and that starts by being the Americans we think others should be.

14. Won't happen unless
we get a Democratic House! and for a conviction you need about 20 more Democratic Senators. I don't put my hopes in any repuke Senator to vote his conscience because I don't think any of them have one!
