Cop charged with beating stabbing victim at hospital

Wielding a small billy club, a veteran Chicago Police officer repeatedly beat a man handcuffed and shackled to a wheelchair while the patient awaited treatment in a Chicago hospital emergency room last summer, Cook County prosecutors say.

The incident took place sometime between late August and early September and was caught on video surveillance tape, prosecutors say.

William Cozzi, 48, a patrol officer from the Grand Central District, is charged with multiple counts of aggravated battery, official misconduct and battery, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Tom Bilyk, who is handling the case.

"He struck him about 10 times in the face and upper body," said Bilyk, supervisor of the state's attorney's professional standards unit.
