what makes us think collectively that our nation is always the "good guys?" This kind of talk just make me want to scream.

1. It doesn't bother me when it comes from the paid political operatives ...

But it seriously pisses me off when members of OUR Congress use such simplistic thinking. First comes to mind is Biden: He loves to straighten his spine as he tells us about how the USA are the "Good Guys." This man is a corporate and posturing POS. I hope he's the next entrenched democratic incumbent that we can send packing thanks to a new DEMOCRATIC new comer. I'm so very sick of his "happy talk" and then figuratively submitting ... rolling on his back for the customary "Rovarian tummy Rub."

But I digress. :blush:

Yes, there's NO good guys in Foreign Policy matters. All countries have the blood of INNOCENTS on their hands. That's why more and more people are realizing that WAR IS THE TERRORISM ... WAR IS PURE EVIL. We should negotiate with ALL to help end all the senseless bloodshed. <another cry in the wilderness>

5. Agreed, but we are NOT the "good guys."

Witness the number of dictators we have supported throughout history and the wholesale slaughter of different peoples at their hands. We are committing war crimes now in Iraq and probably Afghanistan now, for starters. We are not pure nor are we better in shades of gray.

6. It's tribalism.

Most people assume that people in the group that they identify with don't do wrong.

For Shi'ites in Lebanon, they blame Israel, not Hezb.

For Russians, they blame less Stalin and Putin than they do other countries.

China has a mania about overlooking its own shortcomings and focusing on the history of Western and Japanese oppression imposed on the Middle Kingdom.

A hefty number of British Muslims--and Muslims in other places--still can't believe that 7/7 or 9/11 had anything to do with Muslims. Even in Iraq, the polls kept showing that they had trouble believing that any Iraqi could possibly be the suicide in 'suicide attack'; they'd still prefer that it be a Zionist or Crusader plot.

The reaction when there's a transgressor is to deny the act, attribute a very good and sound motivation to it, to deny that the transgressor is in your group.

It works in politics and ethnic advocacy, too. Some partisans that so identify with their party do the same: some dems (or repubs) aren't really dems (or repubs), or they're denounced, or they must have some good, justifiable reason. The phrase 'race traitor' crops up at times.

Tribalism. Pure and simple.
