Larry Johnson: "Let there be no doubt, we have been warned."
Why We Can't Nab Bin Laden

by Larry C. Johnson January 19, 2006

"If ifs and buts were candy and nuts it would be Christmas everyday". This old saying seems appropriate in light of Bin Laden's latest message to the world. If Bin Laden's desires equaled actual capabilities then we would face daily attacks by Al Qaeda operatives. Fortunately, Al Qaeda's actual ability to hit us has been significantly degraded. Despite carrying out spectacular attacks in Spain (March 2004) and England (July 2005), Al Qaeda has not been able to sustain offensive operations in either country, not to mention the United States. We can hinder and even destroy their ability to attack us, but we must make it a priority. Unfortunately, despite tough talk from the White House, we have made finding Bin Laden a low priority. Left unmolested Bin Laden can hurt us and hurt us bad.

So, why is Bin Laden speaking now? He has suffered some recent setbacks. He is certainly reacting to the missile strikes last week in Pakistan that apparently killed some Al Qaeda operatives. Bin Laden is letting his followers and the world know that he is alive and ready to fight to the death. He also is reminding us that he takes the longterm view. The offer of a truce is not a sign of weakness, rather it is a gesture to the Muslim world intended to portray Bin Laden as a man of reason and honor who is intent on being faithful to God's commandments. When he references the 10 year war against the Soviets and the perseverance of the mujahideen and their ultimate victory, this is not mere hyperbole. It is his war plan for success.

So, why is Bin Laden still walking around free and kicking? Why has the United States failed to capture him?

For starters, no one is in charge of this effort.

As for us, we do not have anything to lose. The swimmer in the sea does not fear rain. You have occupied our land, defiled our honour, violated our dignity, shed our blood, ransacked our money, demolished our houses, rendered us homeless, and tampered with our security. We will treat you in the same way. -- OBL

Indeed, warned, not just by OBL, but by an expert who knows how broken Bush and Cheney have rendered all aspects of our National Security.

Peace.

he threatens us with another terrorist attack.

Sometimes I wonder whose side he is on.

20. Talking From Both Sides Of The Mouth, Too
He was just stumping a few weeks back telling us how we're safer. But, then we're worried about more attacks, because HE and Silverspoon say al Qaeda still wants to hit us. Then, he says if Gore had been president, we wouldn't be as safe as we are now!

He can't even get his own story straight, and we're supposed to believe him?

24. Then, We're Not Safer
He said we're safer, not me! So, either we're safer, or we're not safer. Darth is saying we're safer, but we're not! But, we wouldn't be safe if Gore had won, so we're safer, except we're not.

Are we are clear on that now? (Sheesh, what a moron this guy is.)

2. The better question would be ...
Why does Bin Laden seem to look so different in every tape and why are his tapes released at just the right time?

In this case it coincides with the announcement that hearings will be held regarding the administrations warrant less spying!

OBL IS living in the WH!

4. "OBL IS living in the WH!" ROFL!!!!

The "coincidence" with tomorrow's hearings, and all the other bad news that's been released regarding the illegal and unconstitutional surveillance, is intriguing.

However, I think it has more to do with the recent, supposedly successful attack on some of his guys in Pakistan. If those guys really did perish, OBL would need to get a broadcast message to his highly dispersed followers to hang tough and persist with their activities -- he's certainly not going to be making a bunch of satellite calls to boost morale

Peace.

19. The timing is odd
When I first heard of the new OBL tape, I immediately thought Fitz was about to indict Rove and the terror tape was broadcasted as a diversion. But then I read Larry Johnson, and it appears the timing may be due more to our attack in Pakistan. Well, we have been warned.

I mean, OBL *has* to know some things. The CIA trained him in Afghanistan. He probably has all sorts of dirt on Bush Sr. & the others. And I think Saddam knows some things too, which is why they keep delaying his trial. God, I wish those two would "rat" on the neocons. While I don't like either one of them, they would be doing this country a big favor. I'm so tired of the neocons & all their fascist crap.

because we need him to be "on the loose." Had we gotten OBL in Tora Bora, it would have been harder to go into Iraq. He's the boogeyman, and as long as the "boogeyman" is still at large...still gotta fight the "global war on terror." Once we avenge 9-11, people will lose their taste for blood. Or not. 30. Dear Gov. Dean -- OBL; are you sure? (No ‘tin foil hat’ required) …
Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 03:09 PM by understandinglife
20 January 2006 (# 46)

In 1999, William M. Arkin wrote a Washington Post article entitled “When Seeing and Hearing Isn’t Believing.” As you know, Mr. Arkin has pursued the intersection of various technologies with National Security strategy and implementation. Mr. Arkin included the following in that article:

Most Americans were introduced to the tricks of the digital age in the movie Forrest Gump, when the character played by Tom Hanks appeared to shake hands with President Kennedy. For Hollywood, it is special effects. For covert operators in the U.S. military and intelligence agencies, it is a weapon of the future.

"Once you can take any kind of information and reduce it into ones and zeros, you can do some pretty interesting things," says Daniel T. Kuehl, chairman of the Information Operations department of the National Defense University in Washington, the military's school for information warfare.

Digital morphing — voice, video, and photo — has come of age, available for use in psychological operations. PSYOPS, as the military calls it, seek to exploit human vulnerabilities in enemy governments, militaries and populations to pursue national and battlefield objectives.

To some, PSYOPS is a backwater military discipline of leaflet dropping and radio propaganda. To a growing group of information war technologists, it is the nexus of fantasy and reality. Being able to manufacture convincing audio or video, they say, might be the difference in a successful military operation or coup.

Link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/national/dotmil/arkin020199.htm

Why is this article relevant to the most recent “bin Laden” tape? And, why is a “tin foil hat” not required to pursue that question?

Two experts on Osama bin Laden quickly responded to the new tape: Duke Professor, Bruce Lawrence; and, Maumon Fandy, who among other things is a Fellow in Jim Baker’s Institute at Rice University.

Dr. Fandy had the following to say on PBS Online NewsHour:

MAMOUN FANDY: Right, but this particular tape is not terribly inspiring, just looking at the language of it. This is the first tape of bin Laden that has no single verse from the Koran. It does not have the flowery language of Arabic.

It seems to me that it is written in English first, and then translated into Arabic. It is very western style of tape. It is not very characteristic of bin Laden, at least it tells me that the non-Arabic speaking within the al-Qaida network are taking over the organization –

Link: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/terrorism/jan-june06/osama_1-19.html

Amber Rupinta reports for ABC News that Professor Lawrence has considerable reservations about the tape and about the status of bin Laden and his knowledge of bin Laden messages is documented in his recently published “Messages to the World: The Statements of Osama Bin Laden.” As Ms. Rupinta notes, Professor Lawrence:

... thinks bin Laden is dead and has doubts about the tape. Lawrence recently analyzed more than 20 complete speeches and interviews of the al Qaida leader for his book. He says the new message is missing several key elements.

“There’s nothing in this from the Koran. He’s, by his own standards, a faithful Muslim,” Lawrence said. “He quotes scripture in defense of his actions. There’s no quotation from the Koran in the excerpts we got, no reference to specific events, no reference to past atrocities.”

While the CIA confirms the voice on the tape is bin Laden’s, Lawrence questions when it was recorded. He says the timing of its release could be to divert attention from last week’s U.S. air strike in Pakistan. The strike targeted bin Laden’s deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, and killed four leading al Qaeda figures along with civilians.

Lawrence believes faulty Pakistani intelligence led to the strike and the civilian deaths, and the tape was leaked by Pakistani authorities to divert attention from their mistake. “It led to a failed military operation where America got blamed, but the people who are really to blame are the ones who provided the intelligence,” Lawrence said. “I think this is an effort to say were not going look at this terrible incident that happened.”

Link: http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=local&id=3828678

The reason you don’t need a “tin foil hat” is because what follows is not speculation about whether bin Laden is alive, it is not speculation about who created the tape, it is not speculation as to motives for whoever created the tape, and for why it was released yesterday.

I’ve juxtaposed the above because the most important person who should be being provided the tools to know whether they are victims of a psyops campaign or merely recipients of a valid communication from Osama bin Laden is the American citizen. That is not the way the American citizen, today, is being served by their government.

I am increasingly convinced that a crucial, strategic way to differentiate a Democratic Party candidate in the 2006 and 2008 National Election is to have them focus on the power of technology to validate what the citizen is being told, and to direct and regulate the use of technology to protect and expand the citizen’s access to information, and their privacy in doing so.

The contrary currently is the norm as Bush and his neoconster minions have used technology to deceive (Iraqi WMD "intelligence" being just one instance), and violate Federal statutes (FISA, National Security Act), as well as, the 4th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

Otherwise just declare that the US government is now nothing more than a tax-payer subsidized “Hollywood” and, Fox, CNN, The Washington Post, New York Times …., are the distribution channels, and at least serve decent popcorn.

Thank you for your continued leadership,

32. This is excellent - power of technology
I'm also convinced that their use of technology has allowed them to steal whatever elections they want to have, and continue to want. The upcoming elections in November will be so very interesting.

33. the MYTHICAL WALL rises again
i respect LJ's opinions a great deal and appreciate that he is speaking out on this admins failures but i find it incredible that he doesn't consider the possibility that UBL is still working for us since he and the neoCONs seem to share the same goals... like rebuilding iraq and afghanistan and that he seems to pop-up just when the neoCONs will benefit most.

UBL is a straw-man that this criminal cabal use to wage war on their enemies at home and abroad.

UBL can not hurt us any worse than the WH has and certainly not as bad as they have planned for our future.

sorry, i refuse to be afraid of the UBL boogie man, in a cave, thousands of miles away but i do believe in the terrorist in the WH they have demonstrated a CAPABILITY to do sever harm to americans and foreigners, DAILY!

35. Those who trade in fear are often small and fearful themselves
Or as Jim would say "nobody gets out here alive"

34. "The swimmer in the sea does not fear rain."
Only a freaking nut would fear rain but hurricanes are different matter. The bluntness of the metaphor cries out for redemption. A desert traveler relishes the coolness of iced water in the summertime but none the less this same traveler is careful around the gulch when a flash flood is possible. I would say that just like the crazy evangelical pastors and minister in the west, the mostly reproachable, the zealots from all religions do more to harm their respective religions. A religion and or it's philosophy that propels it followers backward into toil will eventually be abandoned or scorned in its over reach. The blade of science slices all equally in the end.

The tenants and the core of the beliefs of most religions may mostly always stand but the reasoning or divine knowledge of how that "vision" came about with it's customs may cease to make sense in later times. Most don't know latin or care to but none the less are being pummeled by the ignorance of not knowing it. The fear of others know more about us than we would like them to and are now using it against us is a real and far greater threat in the long run than any outside force. Not because of anything in the tangible world but just because our genetic makeup of who we are, a biped and predator, a thing with too much time on it's hand, a animal that is hoping to weld this world into own liking with the ignorance other to what is really going on in it.
