1. No, Joe...
You are being called to account. There is a difference, although it seems lost on you. Which may be the main reason you are being called to account. Just chalk it all up to The Circle of Life, Joe. And move on.

3. Desperate Plea To The "Simple Voter"
Matt describes this on mydd...the voters who pay little attention to this race until the last minutes and then can be swayed by superficial slogans or ads or image. While I see this more a habit on the Repugnican side, Joe must think there are some of these votes to be scared or shaken or bought around Hartford or somewhere. He's rolling the "martyr" dice now...the meme has gone from experience or "consitancy" to "i'm being beat up on by evil libruls".

Methinks Joe's end game here is not the 10% that the "pundits" say is his "line of death"...I think it's 5%. Joe wants to be within that threshold...losing "close" that could make his third party chances viable. If he loses by 10% he's toast...but at 5% he could be within "striking" distance with enough Repugnican cross-over votes in November. Remember, this is all about Joe...be prepared for the violins to play loudly today and tomorrow.

4. Liberman votes with the Democrats 98% of the time
He votes in favor of Israel and Iraq and the Democratic voters are going to hang him.

This is a very big dilemma for the Democratic party. If the Democrats take an anti-Israel stance, they risk losing Jewish voters. If they take a pro-Israel stance, they risk losing some liberal voters.

That's why it seems the party is just treading water right now.

6. This has very little to do
with Israel and everything to do on his pro-Iraq war stance.... He votes in favor of war and more war... He votes with the Republicans on so many issues.. Just like the last vote when he voted against increasing minimum wage...

11. So is every moderate Democrat on the chopping block?
If we become a far-left party, we won't be in power for very long. From the polls have I have viewed over the years, I have determined that this is moderate country. The people will hate a far-left government just as much as a far-right government.

I've been to other countries where their populations are more liberal. And I assure you that America isn't ANYTHING close to those populations. Americans may be pissed off at Bush and the GOP, but that doesn't mean they will change their political thinking. As soon as the neo-cons are out of power and the war is over, people will revert back to their original political philosophies. And those philosophies have nothing to do with the far-left.

20. The US is a bull with a ring thru its nose, being yanked to the right.
Edited on Sun Aug-06-06 11:19 AM by ReadTomPaine
The vast majority of this country is naturally left leaning; the aberrations of recent years are hardly reflective of anything more than the culmination of years of effort to dupe the populous with concentrated right wing ideology via co-oped political, media and cultural avenues.

Even though the RW has moved this country unnaturally to the right, it can be moved even more swiftly back toward its progressive-left nature by people dedicated to cutting the influence of the GOP off at the knees. That effort starts right here, by turning out those Democrats who obstruct a progressive platform and weaken the party's strength by siding with the opposition on key issues of war & peace, civil rights and abuse of power.

As to your assertion that extremists can't hold power here due to moderates having some sort of special influence - how do you explain Bush's vast success? He's far more extreme a right winger than any progressive is on the left, and he's in his second term. Any true left leaning government would be a far more comfortable fit than the extremism we are experiencing now.

Democratic conservatives like Joe aren't really Democrats, and they aren't really moderate. They are the future GOP once we are done with dismantling the current right wing political machine. When this crisis is over, they are likely to form the core of a new party.

22. Who is the "far leftist" replacing Joe?
I'd like to meet him. Democratic voters in one small state are unhappy with their senator and suddenly everyone's talking about the entire party on the brink of being overrun by Bolsheviks. That's the canard of the moment by Washington's perfumed and pampered chattering class.

27. Far left my ass
Half of all republicans believe in choice. People are beginning to understand the consequences of allowing the government to undermine unions as their wages and benifits greatly decrease or disapear. At least half of the country supports universal health care. About a third of the republican party wants us to pull out of Iraq within the year. Far left in the Democratic Pary? BS.

The problem is people with an agenda who are pulling the party so far to the right and then spouting off with this "far left" crap.

18. It's not simply support for Israel
It's support for letting an insane Israel kill civilans and destroy a country without repercussion.

Even Americans Jews aren't buying that crap anymore.

Standing up for being sane isn't going to lose any voters, but Liebermann is off the deep end himself so he can't see the truth of the matter.

19. Joe's problems have nothing to do with Israel, and...
everything to do with bush. Pretty much every Democrat is pro-Israel, not every Democrat has swapped spit with bush. Joe's cosiness with bushCo. and the sense of betrayal that that engenders is what has turned people against Lieberman.

25. Once again: this is NOT just about Iraq
Lieberman has been a sore disappointment to his constituents for years now.

I'll enter his terrible showing in the state's presidential primaries as evidence. We're not crazy about him. The state's GOP love him all up, however.

The war may be providing a focus -- but I think that focus is more useful for quickie media analysis and for those not in the state to hang this all on something quick, simple and sound-bitey.

We're just plain old tired of me-first, Holy Joe.

hadn't had his tongue so far up Bush's and the Neocon's asses so that it practically darted out of their mouths, he wouldn't feel that way, and his Democratic constituents wouldn't be so upset with him.

17. It is expected and understood that Joe Leiberman would side with and
promote Israel and that's the way it's always been. Few Dems have problems with that. But, he has NOT always voted with Dems - especially recently - last few years.

He is pro-killing and that is his biggest problem.

He has became a Republican operative.

And then there was his morality stand and behavior towards Pres. Clinton and his desire to not fight in 2000.

He is as far away from Dem Progressives as one can get carrying a Dem label.

We need to look at what he's given us to know that it is not just Israel. Israel hasn't always been on a killing and destruction bender.

21. I don't care about the Iraq war
At least initially, almost everyone voted for the war.

Issues that I care about (which Joe is on the wrong side of):

-votes for judicial confirmations
-vote to ratify certain free trade treaty's
-vote for Patriot act
-support for Terry Schaivo
-support for regulating Hollywood
-support for Bankruptcy bill

These are in the last 4-6 years. If Joe was from Alabama or Mississippi, I'd say leave him. But he's from CT. We should have a good Democratic from CT, not merely one we can expect to vote for the majority leader.
