Michael Moore fest ignores plea to pull film

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Ignoring a request to remove the documentary "Jesus Camp" from its lineup, Michael Moore's Traverse City (Mich.) Film Festival plans two screenings of the film, one Friday and one Saturday.

The documentary, directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, looks at a summer camp for born-again Christian children, and has won top jury awards at this year's Tribeca Film Festival and AFI SilverDocs Film Festival.

After Magnolia Films acquired North American distribution rights last week, the company asked festival organizers to drop the film because it was concerned that any association with the polarizing director of "Fahrenheit 9/11" could damage its prospects in conservative circles.

"The reality of the world we live in today is that if Michael Moore endorses it, tens of millions will automatically reject it," said Magnolia Films president Eamonn Bowles.

1. "Tens of Millions" will reject it? By just being shown
at a festival?

Kind of sums up the whole faux-Christian attitude, don't it?

2. Right, and how many will automatically accept it?
I don't think he's exactly losing money on his films or anything. Are they hoping to get right-wing fundies to watch it or what?

3. Last I heard, Michael Moore's films are highly respected by many,

and even though a lot of people may not like the message, after watching Fahrenheit 9/11, I saw the standing room only audience stand up and applaud. I can't think of that happening any other time. And this was in a very conservative, very Christian part of the country.

Apparently, there is a big group out there who appreciates the truth, regardless of its source. An endorsement by Michael Moore would seem to me to be a positive, not a negative.

4. Jesus and destroying devil music
Can't wait to see it. Sounds like a camp I have personal experience with. I remember one of the Jesus people came up to "lay hands" on me. I rejected by pulling away. It was hilarious. Oh, and I will never forget one of my "saved" fellow campers who decided that Hall & Oates and Duran Duran was "devil" music then proceeded in the stomp fest. Destruction of music, I mean, come on. I know it is H&O and DD but it's a symptom of fundie disease which can develop into book destruction.

6. Welcome to DU
One of my sister's friends went to this lecture sponsered by her church, and got completely brainwashed against "rock" music. She destroyed all of her records, posters, etc. and started acting very strange around us. About six months later, she came out of it, but it was really scary while she was in that period.

9. I am familiar
I went to one of those. It was freaking hilarious. "Backwards masking" is what they called it. If you play Queen's Another One Bites the Dust in reverse, it says "decide to smoke marijuana". Seriously, I am not kidding. I was made to go to these things being raised in a fundamentalist home. I still love my family but I do it from a distance - approximately 1000 miles - with 2 visits per year. Peace!

10. Assholes deserve to flounder with no publicity
They are lucky that Moore drew attention to their work. Otherwise, they would probably face the sound of crickets.

Based on their treatment of Moore, tens of millions plus one (me) will skip the film.

11. "Tens of millions" were going to watch it?
Jeez I didn't know documentaries were so popular. I wonder why my local movie store always hides them near the porn.

13. Is this a publicity stunt?
Because Moore's films are the most successful documentaries in history. With the possible exception of that penguin movie.
