Oh. My. God. Ted Kennedy and the Irish Look of Death.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and General Peter Pace, right, testified to a Senate panel, including Hillary Clinton and Edward Kennedy. (Doug Mills/ The New York Times)

...my mom has that look sometimes...it peels the paint...

That is, of course, the same look that the great Irish boxers have when they are sizing up their victim during the referee's instructions.

It is dripping with contempt....he doesn't need to say a word about his opinion of Rumsfeld. It is on his face for all to see. I LOVE Teddy. I hope he lives to be 100 years old, and stays healthy and in the Senate.

It really sums up the point we have come too.

Rummies doing the hand jive. Pace looks like he going to be ill. Hillary is savoring the moment. Ted - what can I say? He looks like he's ready to slap Rummie any second now. I think it might be worth going to jail just to deck the old bastard.

14. My wife can use that same look on me. Scares the hell out of me!
There's a brilliant song by the band Ok Go about such a look. Called "Invincible."

Lyrics:

“When they finally come to destroy the earth, they'll have to go through you first.
I bet they won't be expecting that.
When they finally come to destroy the earth, they'll have to deal with you first,
and my money says they won't know about the
(screaming) thousand Fahrenheit hot metal lights behind your eyes.
Invincible.
You're invincible.
That crushing, crashing, atom-smashing, white-hot thing... It's invincible.

When they finally come, what'll you do to them? Gonna decimate them like you did to me?
Will you leave them stunned and stuttering?
When they finally come, how will you handle them? Will you devastate them deliberately?
'Cause I'm gonna guess they won't be prepared for the
(screaming) thousand Fahrenheit hot metal lights behind your eyes.
Invincible.
You're invincible.
That crushing, crashing, atom-smashing, white-hot thing... It's invincible.

So, please use your powers for good. You're invincible.”

26. Or this one, which could be Pace's inner monologue
Kenny Loggins- Angry Eyes
Lyrics-

Time, time and again I see you staring down at me
Now, then and again I wonder what it is that you see
With those angry eyes
Well, I bet you wish you could cut me down
With those angry eyes

You want to believe that I am not the same as you
And now I cant conceive, oh lord, of what it is youre trying to do
With those angry eyes
Well, I bet you wish you could cut me down
With those angry eyes
What a shot you could be if you could shoot at me
With those angry eyes

98. Woad?
http://sniff.numachi.com/pages/tiWOADWEAR;ttHARLCH.html

Tune: Men of Harlech

Woad

What's the use of wearing braces,
Hats or spats or boots with laces,
Coats and vests you buy in places
Down on Brompton Road?
What's the use of shirts of cotton,
Studs that always get forgotten?
These affairs are simply rotten--
Better far is woad.

Woad's the stuff to show men,
Woad to scare your foemen
Boil it to a brilliant blue
And rub it on your back and your abdomen.
Ancient Britons never hit on
Anything as fine as woad to fit on
Neck or knees or where you sit on--
Tailors, you'll be blowed!

Romans crossed the English Channel
All dressed up in tin and flannel;
Half a pint of woad per man'll
Clothe us more than these.
Saxons, you can keep your stitches,
For making beds for bugs in britches
We have woad to clothe us which is
Not a nest for fleas.

Romans, save your armors,
Saxons, your pajamas,
Hairy coats were made for goats,
Gorillas, yaks, retriever dogs and llamas.
March on Snowdon with your woad on
Never mind if you get rained or snowed on.
Never need a button sewed on,
W-O-A-D woad (or, Glory be to woad!)(or, Bollocks to the breeze!)

...there's ever been. And he's been at his greatest since 1980, when the lunatics took over. He's been in full-court press to preserve the decencies of American life against those who's try to destroy them, and he's quietly won a lot of victories. That picture is priceless...

28. Keltic golden warrior vs Anglo Saxon thug. Tragic poetic glory vs.
illiterate dull-witted callous butchery. High culture vs low. Faced off across the battlefield. The Kelts will lose the battle but win the war, over the long term, which is a war for the human soul. The invading hordes may slaughter us, but one will survive, and, because he is a child of the Radiant Island, he will remember, and he cannot be made to forget--it is etched in every line of his wise old face, and flashes in his fiery eyes, and pours forth in the eloquent formation of his thoughts--that brutal conquest is an insufficient reason to live, and that we earn our human soul through generosity. He sees the empty man, the worthless slaughterer of many, and hates him, because to earn your soul is not an easy business. It is a battle. It requires all your faculties, and the soulless one is an affront, a devil if you will. He is what we must not be. He represents all that we must struggle to overcome: coldness, brutality, power for power's sake. Keltic memory, however, cannot demonize him, for he, too, is human, and must be incorporated, and must be conquered not on his own brutal terms, but rather by guile, by poetic gift, by story. Victory lay in what human beings remember, not what they suffer here and know. All human beings, future human beings--for we are all one. The wizard, the druid, though he may be locked in battle with what appears to be a demon, yet thinks long term, of the unfolding human story as it ripples through time. How will it all be remembered? Of what use will it be to the future, as the collective human soul aims for its highest accomplishment: the generous heart. Thus the wizard transcends all the carnage around him, and is able to focus with singular penetration on the immediate enemy and the weakness in its paltry soul, that it thinks brute power is the winner; its smugness; its arrogance; all alone over there on its icy throne. Never was true. Never will be. Even in the days of kings, worth was measured by the generosity of their material gifts, symbol of their oneness with all. All for one and one for all. The icy conqueror, the empty man, does not realize what a thin sheet of ice he is sitting on, nor does he see the fires burning all around him even in the eyes of his own minions. He does not know what true victory is; he will never savor it. True victory is self-conquest, through which our greatest desire, true love, enters the world.

The wizard is not a saint. He is a man who struggles with demons. And the empty man is not a demon, he is a failed man--a chilling example of the lack of poetic gift. His smooth, oblivious visage is a lesson to us all. Seek the higher goal, generosity, whatever it might cost you. Mere conquest is worthless coin, in the end. It buys you nothing but the frozen depths of hell.

That's quite a photo you posted, Mr. Pitt.

55. There you are expressing ancient European mythology, wisdom
Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 12:00 PM by Ghost Dog
(and beyond European, and beyond recorded history, though snippets have occasionally been photographed).

This is the authentic voice of the old people that is nevertheless forever young, forever renewed, forever forthcoming.

"True victory is self-conquest, through which our greatest desire, true love, enters the world."

On edit: Also, amongst many pieces of eternal Chinese wisdom there is this (I paraphrase unpoetically): "If you suspect that you may have an enemy, get as close to him as you can." "Love your enemy" may be seen as an extremely progessive form of the same concept.

I can identify with this photo. There's something about our ability to just give "a look" and it can send shivers down the spine of anyone on the receiving end. My kids are always teasing me about "the look" when they reminisce about their childhood years. I never had to say a word. :D

62. Crummy looks like he's praying for mercy in that shot
and Pace appears to be ready to run interference if Teddy comes over the table and starts to choke the living shit out of Crumsfield.

I'm sure the image of that casket a day before and the family of the fallen are superimposed over the DS' face in Teddy's mind as he glares at the Warmongering shithawk.

Rummy: Is this my hand? Is it at the end of my arm? Is it full of blood and bones and other mysterious matters that nobody can really say what they are for sure but at least it helps distract us from the total hell-on catastrophe I've helped create in Iraq? Yes, it is.

Hills: I've really really really always wanted to be against the war and now the polls say it's pretty safe so I'm happy, and I took a poll and found that people like me when I'm smiling, but not too much, so that's what I'm doing right now.

Kennedy: I smell caca.

79. I have seem Senator Kennedy in person twice and
I heard in speak one of those times when I attended the Democratic National Convention in Boston, 2004 as a Delegate from NC!!! :toast:

It was a blast...it pumped me up for the Presidential campaign of 2004!

I wanted my NC homeboy, Senator John Edwards, in the White House..one way or the other.

Instead, I was deprived of the right to have my vote counted...my vote was "lost" in the Carteret County Election Fiasco of 2004..over 4,000 missing votes...

What did I do about it?

1 - Signed up on DU

2 - Co-founded the Carteret Coalition for Verifiable Voting (we have new machines now with a optiscan paper ballot)

3 - Filed for office in my County...Commissioner, 3rd District, Carteret County...

She is in the NH woods on the world's slowest dial-up, so posting for her is a pain in the ass. That'll change this autumn; she's moving into a house where there will be high-speed internet, so you'll see much more of her.

She is, in all respects, doing wonderfully. I'll tell her you asked after her.

108. One of the reasons I so like this pix of TK and the English Overlord--
besides the great antiquity of The Look (goes back at least two and a half millenia to the first sacking of Rome, by the KELTS)--is that it BREAKS up the Senate chumminess and politeness with torturers, liars and mass murderers. I find it so sickening when they're all so deferential and respectful, and all smiley-faced, like Miz Hillary. Granted, she has reason to smile--she socked the asshat in the nose--but still, that's how it usually ends: 'We're all millionaires here (some of us billionaires); we're all Lords of the Earth, or wannabes; we're all prospering, while others are rotting and dying; we're all brethren and sisteren power players under the skin, and so we smile, and smile, and smile together, whatever our petty differences over who gets which loot from the spoils of war and global corporate predation.'

It's great to see Ted's ancient Irish Druid come out, with this "drop dead" eyeing of the Enemy. He's one of the few in the Diebold Congress that still has that kind of soul (and was genuinely elected). The Great Keltic Leaders have ever been this way--men of the people. They hold many in one. They are spiritually incapable of coldness, of callousness to the suffering of others. Their blood runs with the joy of conversation and connectedness. It is a Gift. It is the foundation of the Arthurian legend. And love and sobriety have brought it out in Ted. From us (the many), through him (the one), to Rumsfeld (the enemy): We are done with losing to the likes of you--we have your measure--prepare to die!

He is one of the most down-to-earth people I've ever met with the stature he has.
