Okay, the tea bag thing: We need more coordination
I know SwampRat broached it here (I think) but there are others - and I have no idea who came up with it originally...and it doesn't matter. I'm in contact with some other folks pushing for it, here's
one:

http://www.johnlisainmilo.com/

Lisa emailed me and suggested Aug 16th but they're thinking about moving it up, but (as I replied) I think it's a bit early...my opinion is we need more time to get the plan disseminated. So let's
work on it, okay?
:D

2. I think a mass teabagging would be more appropriate to
the 21st century. Of who, though? Probably Il Dunce.

But the idea of a mass protest action in general is an excellent one.

4. Needs a better Web site, with a registered domain.
Edited on Thu Aug-03-06 10:36 PM by longship
The site can be simple, even a single page, because the message is simple. But this needs to look very professional and consistent.

Addresses need to be formatted like addresses.

ALL CAPS is unprofessional looking. Use font attributes for emphasis.

Images have to be consistent with the message.

There should be a place for BTP people to gather.

This *must* be a registered domain.

We need press coverage.

Just some ideas...

MrCoffee is working with me on some ideas. Please include him, he's got this thing pretty well nailed down.

5. the date of Sept. 4th to send tea was
mentioned just in time for Sept. 11th. This is a great idea, the RNC and WH address was mentioned. This will have to be massive to have an impact.

I would send two boxes one to the RNC and the WH.

12. I'm with you
Tired of clever but ultimately useless protests:

Here's a protest: Try DRINKING tea. You know, give up all corporate soda pop and pop-like products AND ALL BOTTLED WATER products and just drink iced tea.

It's easy. You put two teabags in a cup of FREE TAP water and microwave for two minutes. Put cubed ice up to the brim in two glasses. Pour half of the tea into each glass, then fill the rest with FREE TAP water. Tasty, inexpensive, and politically correct!

(Did you know two gallons of water are wasted for every plastic water bottle? Did you know corporate soda products have actual links to union busting and murder in latin america and asia? Did you know how much corportate soda helps fund Republican reactionary politics (open secrets.org ?)

13. The more I think about it,
even September is too early. There will be plenty of attention getting headlines during the period of September 11th. This new unveiling would get lost in the saturation.

We should go on a full court press with this tea bag mantra starting October 1st. This will give us time to put a real no-nonsense seriousness behind this perfect symbol of our rage.

It should be co-ordinated so that our mailings reach the entities with the greatest "ripple effect", such as the major newspapers and television news channels; these people seeing enough volume that they can't ignore it. Optimistically then it picks up national momentum and tea bag signs show up haunting every republicans speech. Our Dem electees could start repeating the victory visual.

One month of forcing republicans to hear this and look at it will be just as sweet as General Patton giving a pep rally. The worst thing we can do is peak too early.

The crescendo is always at the end. And if we do this right reminding America of the tyranny we must overthrow once again, we can be standing in our living rooms waving our tea bags in wild jubilance on election night.

14. Swamps idea and I thought it was excellent
This was Swamps thought....I ran with it along with Mr. Coffee. We wanted to make it a reality so I posted it on my web page. I have also written our editor to the local paper. Swamp thought the date was too soon and we changed it from August 16 to September 4, 2006 in order to get more people behind this effort. This needs to be a coordinated effort to let Washington know Enough is Enough! Someone suggested we get corporations behind this effort. I suggested folks visit opensecrets.org and they list the corporations who contribute to RNC and DNC. Union based corporations are most likely to help with this effort. Please visit: www.johnlisainmilo.com for information. Doesn't matter whose idea it is .....it does matter that we are all on the same page and make this a reality. We are all upset (well disgusted) with this administration and this is a symbolic gesture that WE WILL PREVAIL....AND LIBERTY, FREEDOM AND CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS still exist.

21. NOW I AM BEING OUSTED AND LEFT OUT
Now I am being made a complete fool.....by my fellow democrats. This was a simple idea and all I wanted to do is my part... I posted on simple web page.....own your own domain through yahoo. I really don't know much about it and it was actually dedicated to my husband before today. Now the dates changed and changed and now every one is hush hush....and making their own plans. I don't want any claim to fame........just was happy to have found DU yesterday and felt like I was a part of a place that shared my views. I have been grieving for this country now for quite awhile. My husband, who is a vietnam vet...can hardly speak about politics right now because he is so full of disgust for this administration. So what is this all about anyway??? Part of what has gone wrong with the democratic party....we have been scattered...not coordinated in our efforts. That is what RNC has going for them! We must come together and the teabag idea....I thought was a perfect show of that kind of coordination! Lisa

23. Why can't we do this now?
Lisa, I think this is a great idea -- so great I've already liberated two of my husband's very precious English teabags, wrote IMPEACH BUSH on them, and tucked each into an envelope! I was just looking for the addresses again when I came across this thread and it seems it's supposed to be a coordinated effort? Heck, I say start sending them now and don't stop!! Do it once a week or whatever we each can handle. (Hubby will flip!) Let others catch on along the way and they can join the thing in progress. It'll take WEEKS to rev up anyway, and will have a much bigger impact if it's not over-coordinated, I think.

I like to think of the RNC and the WH getting a trickle and then a steady flow of teabags in the mail....

26. Mind you, I don't think there's any problem with
...planning for a big push on a specific date, like Oct 1 as has been suggested. I just think it might be better to let folks act now and continue up to that date if they want. Protests are far more meaningful when they're spontaneous. That isn't always possible, but in this case I see no reason to hold folks back. Empower 'em. Give them the idea and the culmination date, and let them run with it.

I think that's something lacking on the ground these days. You can organize something to a T and totally put off the people you're trying to energize because there's nothing really for them to do but "show up".

Also, of course, the more planning that goes into it, the sooner the RNC twig and expect it -- and since this is being discussed on a rather notorious forum they probably already know! It's not going to be a surprise...unless they're absolutely inundated with teabags. :)

Turning Tyranny into Tea-ranny

A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION
by Ray Taliaferro

Graduates of fifth grade should know the immediate goal of the Boston Tea Party was to protest taxation without representation, not to dress up like a bunch of Native Americans and run around a ship. It was a protest done right; a delicate balance of symbolism and panache that was destined to make the history books. What that fifth grader should also understand, hopefully, is that the over-arching goal of the tea toss was bigger than taxes. It was to declare what has now become a fundamental ideology of the United States: we will NOT accept tyranny imposed upon American people by any government, foreign or domestic. King George III got the message loud and clear, as did the rest of the world.

But if the Bostonians of 1773 could see us now, it wouldn’t just be tea they’d hurl over the sides of that ship.

We’ve been living under the tyranny of the Bush administration for over three years now. Disenfranchised American voters in Florida were taxed, but their vote never counted. Gay Americans are taxed, but their love is not acknowledged. Hundreds of Americans have been imprisoned in Guantanamo, but their rights have never been recognized. And in what is the most egregious act of all, the President misrepresented a threat that didn’t exist in Iraq, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Americans and thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians. Two hundred and thirty one years ago we stood up to the tyranny of one King George, and now it’s time to do the same to another. We must TEA BAG BUSH!

Americans must send a message to the White House that we will no longer stand idly by while all of our rights are eroded by a group of power mad neo-cons. The administration is already in hot water, and now it’s time to add the tea. I’m calling for a national campaign to send tea bags to the White House en masse, as many as you can, for as long as you can. Send one bag a week or one box a week; send one bag a day or ten bags a day, from now until November 2. The Bush administration will soon realize that the public demands a regime change here at home.

Now, it’s possible the President may not understand the symbolism, but hopefully Karl Rove or one of his other henchmen will explain it to him very slowly, using small words. But if you’re still worried he might not understand, there are plenty of pretty color pictures of the Boston Tea Party you can print out and stuff in the envelope along with your tea. For added impact, I recommend sending a nice im-Peach flavored brew, but it’s your call.

The important thing is that you tell your lovers and tell your friends, and that they tell their lovers and their friends, that it’s time to TEA BAG BUSH! Think of the quizzical look on Bush and Cheney’s face when millions upon millions of tea bags inundate the White House. If a picture is worth a million words, that look on Bush’s face is surely worth a million tea bags.

It’s time to make our Bostonian-American ancestors proud again; it’s time to show them that the principles they fought for are alive and well in today’s America. Let us turn tyranny into tea-ranny. It’s time to TEA BAG BUSH!
