Bombing is backed by most American voters
The Times August 04, 2006

From Tom Baldwin in Washington

ISRAEL’s military campaign in southern Lebanon is still being backed by most American voters, according to a survey published yesterday that shows public opinion in the US once again sharply at odds with views in Europe.
The Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll found that 59 per cent believed that Israel’s actions were “justified”, although a quarter of this group stated that the military had behaved in an “excessively harsh” fashion.

<snip>

Last month the Reverend John Hagee, a Pentecostal television evangelist from Texas, convened a meeting in Washington of 3,500 members of Christians Unified for Israel. The organisation is dedicated to building support for Israel, even in states where there are few Jewish voters.

<snip>

President Bush sent a message to the gathering praising Mr Hagee and his supporters for “spreading the hope of God’s love and the universal gift of freedom”. He is said to have added: “God bless and stand by the people of Israel and God bless the United States.”

3. Well in all fairness, Hagee is just trying to get his Armageddon on.
He doesn't actually give a shit about Israeli's or the Jewish people, don't ya know.

11. I'm getting really sick of this "brown people" meme
Does being "brown" mean that you're always noble, or incapable of playing a leading role in making a war happen?

I doubt Israelis would give a shit if the folks who were shooting rockets at them were pink, blue or even green lizard people. I sure wouldn't.

14. Technically, the fundies want them all in one place, rapture-ready...
Muslims, Jews & Arabs, so that ALL who don't "aspire" to Jesus can be destroyed in one fell swoop...that's what the Xtian fundies are looking forward to in their twisted interpretation of a biblical "End Times".

15. Well, there it is.
That means some folks will have a hell of time figuring it out.

5. Let's be clear about Hagee
His organization's STATED purpose is "building support for Israel," but its true agenda is strictly Christian Dominionist -- to them, the only ONLY reason to keep any Jews around is to fulfill the "prophecy" of Revelations, in which 144,000 Jews are let into heaven in a sort of grandfather-clause arrangement. If not for that technicality, these people have NO USE for Israel or any Jews beyond the 144,000. NONE.

8. I thought bearing false witness was something a reverend
shouldn't do.
Assuming the numbers are close to correct, fifty nine percent is a slim majority, not "most."

9. Plus one quarter of the 59%
seem to feel they've gone too far. Factor in those feelings and "most in support" starts to dwindle even more.

10. The ministers I looked up to and respected as a youth seem
to have disappeared. Well no, perhaps not. They, or the ones who have followed them, are probably going quietly about the business they were called to do and it's just the loudmouth hypocritical blowhards that attract attenton.

12. I think you are right--ministers, people of the cloth,
whatever they designate themselves are a diverse lot. Some are solid, community people. Others are walking the fine line of charlatanry. It seems to me that this weird interpretation of Revelations is really just a flash in the pan sound bite geared at little more than getting attention and collecting money.

working.
