10. They redirected the river to the Canadian side of Goat Island

... to shore up the edge of the falls on the American side. (Erosion.) The American channel was dewatered from June 12 to November 15.

That photo is taken from the west-northwest (in Canada), facing east-southeast. The American side of the Niagara River is to the left and Goat Island is on the right in the photo. The Canadian Falls and the Canadian side aren't visible (except in the distant top).

The photo below shows the layout of the area. (That's Goat Island in the center.) The flow of the river is from right, to left, to top ... and under the Rainbow bridge.

...diverted to the American side while the Canadian side was being repaired to ease the erosion problem.

It was still a lot of water.

Made me have to pee real bad. I remember that. The power of suggestion I guess?

17. I remember that. I lived in Rochester, NY, then. (Brrrr!)

We (ex-wife and I) used to travel (during the Christmas holidays) to either Detroit (through Buffalo/Niagara) or Ohio (along the Erie south shore) and were occasionally stopped by the snow/ice and overnighted in some motel along the way. MISERABLE driving! Miserable.

19. Yep. In those days, you just expected to get stuck a few times a year.

Sliding into a ditch was pretty normal stuff, too.

I walked to school the first morning after the blizzard, drifts up higher than my head. I was about half way there before someone shouted from their unshoveled driveway, "What are you thinking, kid? School's closed!"

20. In Rottenchester, the worse winter was '82

We got DUMPED on by Lake ("effect") Ontario. I'm 6'2" and I had a hard time, after several snowfalls, throwing the snow high enough to get it off the driveway. That winter, many a weekday morning was (1) get up, (2) dress warm, (3) go out and shovel snow, (4) come in and eat, (5) shower, shave, and get dressed for work (6) dress warm, (7) start the car, (8) shovel 1"+ more snow, (9) try to get out of the driveway, and (10) drive 25mph to work. It'd take 2 hours or more.

In 1983, I moved to California and used my show shovel for a dust pan when I swept the garage or walkway.

For two months during the winter of '82, I couldn't see the fence around my property because the snow was deeper than it was high.

That was enough for a lifetime. (Yechhh!) ((Now I have to live in Michigan, again.)) (((Yechhh!)))
