Warned by some area religious leaders and several board members that the name “Demeter,” Greek goddess of the harvest,
might unnerve the some of the county’s Christian residents, the county board voted to change the name last month to “Agriculture, Mother of Civilization.”
Now, some ministers say they’re pleased with the county board’s decision to give the five-and-a-half-foot tall statue what they see as a more appropriate tagline. But the statue’s sculptor, David Seagraves, sees the change as a bit of a cop-out.
