Israel 'preventing aid convoys reaching southern Lebanon'

Rome/Beirut - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Tuesday accused Israeli armed forces of preventing it from distributing aid in southern Lebanon.

Out of a total of 18 trucks with food supplies and various emergency relief for three village in the crisis region, only six had been allowed through, it said from its Rome headquarters.

Israeli troops had first blocked WFP emergency transport on Sunday, a spokesman for the organization said.

'We feel increasingly frustrated that our convoys are being obstructed as the people in southern Lebanon will soon have no food, water or medicine,' WFP expert Amer Daoudi said.

'There are large numbers of poor, sick and old people who couldn't leave their houses,' he said, calling on all parties to the conflict not to block the convoys, which would lead to a much greater tragedy unfolding and even greater suffering.

2. Sadly, this doesn't surprise me at all....
It shows more disregard for the people of Lebanon. The same disregard Israel has shown since this thing started.

3. Isn't this exactly what an ethical, humanitarian nation would do
when they are only seeking to defend themself?

7. Is this the three villages S. of Bint Jbeil where
fighting was still going on yesterday?

And they let in 6 trucks?

I pity the people in those villages, but the article makes it sound like all of southern Lebanon is affected. It says nothing about most of S. Lebanon. It's talking about an area that's maybe 5 miles x 5 miles.

They understand the implicatures just fine.

10. Sounds like the problem includes an area greater than 5x5 miles

No time to waste

“We are increasingly frustrated that our convoy movements are being hampered, leaving people in the south stranded for what is now nearly three weeks. We have no time to waste – they are running out of food, water and medicine. Many are poor, sick, or elderly and could not be evacuated earlier,” warned Amer Daoudi, WFP Emergency Coordinator.

According to one humanitarian organisation working in Lebanon, a food crisis is looming in the south, where a severe shortage of water is prompting people to drink from animal ponds that are contaminated with bacteria.

Rmeish, which usually has 5,000 residents, is now hosting 25,000 inhabitants who have fled the fighting in surrounding areas.
