A thought on the recent minimum-wage proposal.
Edited on Sun Jul-30-06 12:49 PM by varkam
As many of you probably know by now, Republicans have proposed a measure that would raise the minimum wage by some $2.10 with an amendment that would also cut taxes on inheritance (aka 'The Paris Hilton Tax'). Clearly such a tax cut would not benefit the same people who are affected by an increase in minimum wage.

As I understand it, the traditional argument that has been given against raising the minimum wage is that it would slow the economy and harm job creation. So my thought is this: by their own logic, are the Republicans willing to sacrifice the economy and jobs on the altar of giving to the richest members of our society?

Just food for thought in an election year.

1. No, they know it won't pass. This is just fodder

so they can not only claim that Dems voted against protecting Americans from the Death Tax, but also voted against an minimum wage increase.

The only bills they ever try to pass are election-year "Gotcha" bills

2. By throwing the Paris Hilton amendment on the bill, they can then say
they tried to raise the minimum wage but it was defeated by those damn libruls in congress.
