FYI Isreali Peace Movement: Coalition of Women for Peace
Edited on Sun Jul-30-06 10:05 AM by sfexpat2000

The Coalition: General info
A Brief Bio

The Coalition of Women for Peace has become one of the leading voices in Israel advocating for a just and viable peace between Israel and Palestine ever since its founding in November 2000, just six weeks after the current Intifada began.

The Coalition brings together independent women and nine women's peace organizations, some newly formed and others promoting coexistence since the founding of the state of Israel. We are a mix of Jewish and Palestinian women (all citizens of Israel), and we take action to amplify the voices of women calling for peace and justice for all inhabitants of the region.

2. Ariiga: For Pleasure and Peace
Today's Situation

The Condoleezza two step Friday, July 28, 2006

Israel was sending messages every way it can to Damascus, telling Syria it does not want war with it. Former defense minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, Home Front Commander Maj. Gen. Gershon Yitzhak, and the entire press said as much this morning. But at the same time, Army Radio reported that top officials from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards were in Damascus this week for meetings with Syrian officials, Hizbollah leaders, and officials from the various Palestinian rejectionist groups based in Damascus. And Israeli public statements about the multinational force -- for which nobody is yet volunteering -- include mention of the need for some force with authority to monitor and prevent arms deliveries over the Syrian border into Lebanon. >

5. Physicians for Human Rights - Israel

Physicians For Human Rights-Israel was founded in 1988 with the goal of struggling for human rights, in particular the right to health, in Israel and the Occupied Territories. Human dignity, wellness of mind and body and the right to health are at the core of the world view of the organization and direct and instruct our activities and efforts on both the individual and general level. Our activities integrate advocacy and action toward changing harmful policies and direct action providing healthcare. Today Physicians For Human Rights-Israel has more than 1150 members, over half of whom are healthcare providers.

"The Association of Israeli and Palestinian Physicians For Human Rights", as the association was then called, was established during the first months of the Palestinian uprising in the Occupied Territories by a group of Israeli and Palestinian physicians- Dr, Ruchama Marton initiated the group and was the first Chairperson.

Daily, people were wounded and killed. One of the association’s first activities was a visit to the hospitals in the Gaza Strip, and protest against the use of medical care as a means of controlling the local population. In addition, we protested against doctor participation in the torture of Palestinian detainees. The association's actions were based on the principles of medical ethics and on international conventions relevant to medical staff..

Since the founding of Physicians for Human Rights-Israel we have expanded our activities and today focus on a wider range of topics centering on health in the broadest sense, while calling for social solidarity both within and outside of the borders of Israel. Today we run five projects: the Occupied Territories Project, the Prisoners and Detainees Project, the Migrant Workers and Refugees Project, the Project for the Unrecognized Villages of the Negev, and the Residents of Israel Project. In addition, we run a mobile clinic in the Occupied Territories, and an open clinic in Tel Aviv that provides services for all within Israel who have no legal status and therefore no health insurance. The association believes that the combination of medical ethics and human rights serves as a moral touchstone for doctors who find themselves caught in conflicts between the system in which they work and the demands of their conscience. The foundation also acts in situations where medical ethics and human rights are challenged, as in the case of doctor participation in torture.

6. Shalom Achshav PeaceNow - Israel

About Shalom Achshav

Shalom Achshav (Peace Now) is the largest extra-parliamentary movement in Israel, the country's oldest peace movement and the only peace group to have a broad public base.

The movement was founded in 1978 during the Israeli-Egyptian peace talks. At a moment when these talks appeared to be collapsing, a group of 348 reserve officers and soldiers from the Israeli army's combat units published an open letter to the Prime Minister of Israel calling upon the government to make sure this opportunity for peace not be lost. Tens of thousands of Israelis sent in support for the letter, and the movement was born.

The basic principles of the movement from the outset were the right of Israel to live within secure borders and the right of our neighbors to the same, including the right of the Palestinians to self-determination. In time the movement became convinced that the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel in the territories occupied in the 1967 war is the only viable solution to the conflict. Once the PLO, in 1988, accepted UNSC resolution 242 and the principle of the two-state solution, Peace Now led a massive 100,000 person demonstration calling upon the government to negotiate with the PLO. Fully supporting the break-through represented by the 1993 Oslo Accords, Peace Now has consistently supported any and all steps promising to promote resolution of the conflict, in addition to pressing all parties in power in the country to initiate steps to bring about the end of the occupation and negotiations for peace.

Peace Now operates through public campaigns, advertisements, petitions, distribution of educational materials, conferences and lectures, surveys, dialogue groups, street activities, vigils, and demonstrations. The movement organized the largest demonstration ever held in Israel, some 400,000 people (of a population at the time of 5 ½ million) in 1982 calling for a commission of inquiry into the Sabra and Chatilla massacre. (The commission established as a result, recommended that Ariel Sharon be removed as Defense Minister.)

10. Women in Black

Who are Women in Black?

Women in Black… is a world-wide network of women committed to peace with justice and actively opposed to injustice, war, militarism and other forms of violence. As women experiencing these things in different ways in different regions of the world, we support each other’s movements. An important focus is challenging the militarist policies of our own governments. We are not an organisation, but a means of communicating and a formula for action.

WiB vigils
Any group of women anywhere in the world at any time may organize a Women in Black vigil against any manifestation of violence, militarism or war. Women in Black (WiB) actions are generally women only. Our actions often take the form of women wearing black, standing in a public place in silent, non-violent vigils at regular times and intervals, carrying placards and handing out leaflets.

23.  Taayush --Arab and Jewish Grassroots:

We -- Arab and Jewish citizens of Israel -- live surrounded by walls and barbed wire: the walls of segregation, racism, and discrimination between Jews and Arabs within Israel; the walls of closure and siege encircling the Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip; and the wall of war surrounding all inhabitants of Israel, so long as Israel remains an armed fortress in the heart of the Middle East.

In the fall of 2000 we joined together to form "Ta'ayush" (Arabic for "life in common"), a grassroots movement of Arabs and Jews working to break down the walls of racism and segregation by constructing a true Arab-Jewish partnership. A future of equality, justice and peace begins today, between us, through concrete, daily actions of solidarity to end the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and to achieve full civil equality for all Israeli citizens.

25. Gush Shalom
Edited on Sun Jul-30-06 12:24 PM by sfexpat2000

"Gush Shalom (Translated from Hebrew, the name means "The Peace Bloc")
is the hard core of the Israeli peace movement.

Often described as "resolute", "militant", "radical" or "consistent", it is known for its unwavering stand in times of crisis, such as the al-Aksa intifada.

For years now, Gush Shalom has played a leading role in determining the moral and political agenda of the peace forces in Israel, as well as in breaking the so-called "national consensus" based on misinformation."

26. B'TSELEM: The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights

B'TSELEM - The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories was established in 1989 by a group of prominent academics, attorneys, journalists, and Knesset members. It endeavors to document and educate the Israeli public and policymakers about human rights violations in the Occupied Territories, combat the phenomenon of denial prevalent among the Israeli public, and help create a human rights culture in Israel.

B'Tselem in Hebrew literally means "in the image of," and is also used as a synonym for human dignity. The word is taken from Genesis 1:27 "And God created humans in his image. In the image of God did He create him." It is in this spirit that the first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that "All human beings are born equal in dignity and rights."

As an Israeli human rights organization, B'Tselem acts primarily to change Israeli policy in the Occupied Territories and ensure that its government, which rules the Occupied Territories, protects the human rights of residents there and complies with its obligations under international law.

B'Tselem is independent and is funded by contributions from foundations in Israel, Europe, and North America that support human rights activity worldwide, and by private individuals in Israel and abroad.

29.  Adva Center - think tank

Adva is the Hebrew word for ripple,
the effect to which we aspire

"An independent think tank focused on issues of equality and social justice in Israel."

Adva Center is a non-partisan, action-oriented Israeli policy analysis center. ACTION describes one- half of our program and POLICY ANALYSIS the other half.

The heart of Adva is advocacy for policy changes favoring disadvantaged groups in Israel via (1) consulting for advocacy organizations, Cabinet members and legislators; organizing coalitions for social change, testifying at public forums, and giving media interviews; (2) an extensive popular education program; and (3) a hotline for health rights, targeted at low-income persons.

The head of Adva is policy analysis, done in the framework of (1) the National Budget Analysis Program, which includes budget reports and budget workshops for legislators and civil society organizations; and (2) reports published as The Israel Equality Monitor. This part of the Adva program provides the underpinnings not only for the advocacy work of Adva but also for the advocacy work of a wide variety of other social justice organizations in Israel.

It appears they believe you can obtain peace through peaceful means! Makes a little more sense than killing innocents in the guise of peace regardless of national origin.

We are all one race, the human race, and we need to build peace through peace not bombs and horrific deaths and injuries.
