Isn't Mel Gibson's DUI typical of the fact that these ultra pius Repugs
are above the law? Jimimny Christmas, none of them have to obey the laws. Rush with drugs, Bennett and gambling! Mel was speeding too, how does that effect "Pro-Life' if he were to kill someone while speeding drunkenly? What a hypocrite! Yet he has a fit if a woman is allowed to abort a fetus! We have another Ahole to add to the crime spree list! Perhaps Mel will now ask for forgiveness at his own church!

He is working on a new film called Apocalypto, and it's about the barbaric rulers of the Mayan civilization, and in a recent interview Mel Gibson said "the fear-mongering we depict in the film reminds me of President Bush and his guys."

He may be pious but I'm not so sure he's a Republican.

20. Remember John Bircher John Schmitz from Orange County, CA?
I was reading in QuettaKid's outstanding post on the Blackwater mercenaries here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x1756581

and reading about Blackwater's top brass, which includes John Schmitz's son, Joseph. His father, the ultra-right-winger John Schmitz who died in 2001, had two kids with a German mistress. (Party of family values, anyone?) :grr: Google "John Schmitz" to see what a raving Nazi lunatic he was, should you be unfamiliar with his historic insanity. His daughter, Mary Kay LeTourneau, is one of the rash of teachers who've had sex with their underage pupils. It's absolutely insane.

http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=108028&ran=144012
<snip>
JOSEPH SCHMITZ, 49, became chief operating officer and general counsel of the Prince Group in September 2005 after a stint as inspector general at the Defense Department.

<snip>

John Schmitz’s political career ended with the revelation that he had a mistress who bore two of his children. He then moved to Washington, where he bought a house once owned by Sen. Joseph McCarthy.

Joseph Schmitz’s sister, Mary Kay LeTourneau, also became embroiled in a scandal. As a married teacher in Washington state, she went to prison after being convicted of having a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old student with whom she ultimately had two children. The two have since married.

74. for pete's sake
gibson is as aware as anybody, that he is a human being, with faults, who makes mistakes

apparently, there is this meme i see. if any religious person does something wrong, then their whole religious outlook, and worthiness as a human being, is now suspect

here's a little clue. being religious (or not) does not mean one is perfect

mel (apparently) made a mistake and committed a crime. big whoop

i don't condemn him, or think him hypocritical, any more than i do for patrick kennedy

i have more than one friend killed by drunk drivers. i HATE drunk driving. i am not trying to minimize it

but i also know that it is a common offense (unfortunately), that cuts across class, gender, religion, and nearly every other line

76. I am saying he is a hypocrite. His arrest record as has been discussed
elsewhere on DU proves it. He is anti-Semitic, as his comments to the arresting officers attest and an admitted misogynist. His comments to the female sergeant were disgusting.Yes, in fact, that kind of behavior makes your claim to be a "religious" person suspect. I jumped on this because it is part of the big picture with Gibson, and as re;his comments regarding Micheal J. Fox and gays , and women are all documented and public, I find him a disgusting human being and was glad for his comeuppance. That is all.I find it unfathomable that you would rise to the defense of such a person.

Gibson with your broad brush of assumptions, you aim at me. Your anger takes you everywhere.

Shall I go house to house and when I encounter a person who believes abortion is a sin, tattoo a scarlet "A" to their forehead? Shall I burn them all at the stake? Would that assuage your rage?

Or would it suffice to work diligently (beyond the keyboard) to insure candidates who will not overturn Roe vs Wade are elected -while allowing private citizens to embrace their own faith & beliefs?

The questions, of course, are rhetorical.

Edited on Fri Jul-28-06 04:46 PM by brentspeak
If anything, he's pretty much center-left, and he's against the Iraq War, even praising Michael Moore's film. On issues like abortion and stem cell research he's extremely conservative, but that doesn't make him a hypocritical Republican. For all you know, Gibson a Democrat, not a Republican.

Comparing him with Rush and Bennett makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

42. Catholics don't have a problem with alcohol like fundie
protestants do. I remember the priests being pretty well oiled back when I went to parochial school. I had a friend who became a nun but she joined an order that was founded in Germany because they got beer with their meals. :-)

69. Not minimizing DWI, it was an answer to the OP's question

"Isn't Mel Gibson's DUI typical of the fact that these ultra pius Repugs are above the law?"

I said it wasn't it was just a crime.

60. A bit more complicated than you make it.
Hmm, I know what you mean concerning those who hold to extremely right-wing views, and how those that follow these kinds of views can come off sometimes as hypocrites. I think it is a bit too judgemental to crush someone verbally for failing to live up to their own standards. Often repression can lead to a glut of held back lusts. Usually when we set the moral/ethical/cultural standard too high, we will fail to reach that standard if we are not careful. There is a lot of delusion carried with this kind of moral elitism, and so we tend to look more at the moral/ethical speck in someone else's eye rather than the huge log in our own eye. Obviously when people do these kinds of things, we feel that they have it coming to them. To me though, it makes me sad, and often I find that this mutated protestant culture has lost touch with what it's own values mean, becoming mere dogma and not something to live by in all parts of life. I

In many ways I see this kind of post as something dangerously similar to the moral thumping that is seen by many right wing types. It is this kind of reaction to illogical actions never solves anything.

that is just my opinion though.

Cheers: Titus

72. That "log from you own eye" schtick gets brought up by Republicans a LOT
whenever they seem to be caught in something. Just saying.
