without some group of people to demonize?

2. Hey, it's the American way. Where I grew up (this was over 40years ago)
we never heard the word "nigger," because there simply weren't any black people for about 200 miles at least. And people didn't routinely travel far, there and then.

But do you know what we did hear? "Goddamn Frogs this, Goddamn frogs that."

"Frogs" being French Canadians. (We were only about 30 miles from the border of Quebec.) No, why on earth those our parents had a problem with the French Canadians, I have NO clue. It's not like anyone around there had a pot to piss in, anyway.

So go figure. It's just the American way, as I said.
