Being nationally ridiculed is certainly one way to boost one’s name identification among voters. Just ask Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio).

Last week, the Schmidt campaign touted a poll that shows she “had achieved a name identification and awareness level extremely high for a freshman member of Congress.”

Not surprising, given that her pointed attack on military veteran Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) before Thanksgiving went over like a lead balloon, earning her negative media attention across the country, as well as a parody on “Saturday Night Live.”

But the Schmidt campaign continues to make lemonade from the sour episode, as the freshman member attempts to ward off a primary challenge from Bob McEwen, who is scheduled to announce his intentions today.
