4. Why won't it stop?

All sides say they want peace, and all sides use all of the weapons they can get their hands on. Why can't it, just for one day, just STOP? Is this all that we can come up with to settle disputes? Are we humans, supposedly so far advanced from other species on this planet, so stubborn and blind that we can't find a way to stop killing each other?

I read, many years ago, that the reason that humans became the dominant species on this planet was because we used our brains to cooperate with each other. We didn't have the speed, or power, or skill that the other animals had, so we had to depend on each other. Has it happened that we have so far gone downhill from our cave-dwelling ancestors that we have forgotten how to work together?

I read, and I don't remember where, about a distant ancestor who was born with major birth defects, but who was apparently cared for by his clan, or tribe, or whatever social unit they considered themselves. Have we so far descended into madness that we are crueler than our cave dwelling ancestors? It would seem so. Perhaps after we all kill each other, enough life will be left to repopulate this earth. If the new world is to survive, it would seem that it's only chance would be for us not to. We are too savage to live in a balanced world. As long as the planet, and all of it's beauty survives, maybe it's best that we leave it, and let it find a way back to harmony with the universe.
