The militant group Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers during clashes Wednesday across the border in southern Lebanon, prompting a swift reaction from Israel, which sent ground forces into its neighbor to look for them.

The forces were trying to keep the soldiers' captors from moving them deeper into Lebanon, Israeli government officials said on condition of anonymity.

According to the Lebanese police force, the two Israeli soldiers were captured in Lebanese territory, in the area of Aïta Al-Chaab, near to the border with Israel, where an Israeli unit had penetrated in middle of morning

10. At the very least, it's a distraction from the disaster in Iraq....
Edited on Tue Jul-25-06 08:15 PM by Postman
for the time being.

Or because Iraq is such a disaster, widen the war and blame it all on Iran and Syria getting in the way of progress.

What scum we have for politicians.

8. From what I understand the border is in dispute. Which is why each side
says it was on their side of the border.

11. That Is The State Of It, Sir
According to the border recognized by the United Nations, the men were not in Lebanon when they were attacked.

14. Search on
perry and maps and the perry-castaneda map collection will turn up in google (or, presumably, whatever search engine).

Currently they have available a PDF of UNIFIL posts and a road map of S. Lebanon.

The Sheba'a farms area is in dispute, but that's along the de jure Syrian-Lebanese border east of Qiryat Shemona, some 20 miles or so from Aita-al-Chaab (?).

Aita-al-Chaab (?) is quite close to the border, but NW of Mansoura, miles west of Bint Jbail, on the road from Rmaich to the coast. The 1949 armistice line has not been in question, and there is no active disputes over where the border lies in this area, to my knowledge.

16. I agree-there is no dispute about there being in Israel when kidnapped

The 1949 armistice line is in question, and the Israeli's where on the Israeli side of the border when attacked.

15. Put me amongst those who have been wondering this as well
I was going to post to ask about it after I heard a caller to one of AAR's shows said that they were in Lebanon.

Thanks for being the one to ask, it is an important question.
