2. Nice if you can arrange it. But my office is small
and everyone drives from a different direction. No one lives in my area.

3. Good for you. And I do hope that if the price of gas goes down, you'll
continue to do so. It's a social opportunity as well, yes?

I don't commute, so I can't carpool. But I'm happy to hear you're doing it.

6. I drive 106 miles a day and have a car with 80,000 miles on it
So does the person I'm going to commute with. Its a bit inconvenient but we both have good reasons to do it. And he's a nice guy. I hope we like the same music.

9. 106 miles a day? Maybe it's time for you to move into town.
That worked out great for us. We can ride bikes to pretty much anywhere we need to go.

And if we can't because it's raining or cold, everything is within two miles, so not much gasoline used.

12. I live in Madison
Its the center of the universe for liberal political activism. My heart is here. It happened that I got a job 53 miles away, but I'd be miserable being the only liberal in Beloit, Wisconsin.

25. No, I went to elementary school in Beloit many years ago
and about half the kids I knew had parents who worked at "Fairbanks." The other half worked at Beloit Ironworks.

The families owned houses and cars on one industrial worker's income.

28. Probably doesn't employ as many people now
They assemble the engines there. But some of the ship engine designs are european and the contracts mandate that we buy parts from certain european manufacturers. Well, guess what, the dollars getting weaker against the euro so its harder to make money on engines.

Lots of ex military people working there and lots of lifelong employees.

of choosing wwhere we live AND where we work.

I understand.

19. My real career, when I finally get there
will involve both computers and political activism. But I haven't managed to integrate these two yet. I work at a place where they manufacture huge diesel engines for ships and submarines.

4. Give up your car if at all possible
That will save you insurance, parking, payments, etc. as well as gas. Join a car cooperative, or see about starting one in your area. Make use of existing public transit. Buy a bicycle or learn to walk (I can't tell you how many people I see grumbling about gas prices, then still drive four blocks to pick up a single gallon of milk.)

The best possible answer to rising gasoline prices is not to buy any at all. :hi:

Seems like a good idea. It's not feasible for everybody, but if you can do it, then terrific.

7. Carpooling and public transportation are the way to go
Edited on Mon Jul-24-06 08:52 PM by Bluzmann57
Except for some of us, it's just not possible. We all live in different areas and start at different times as well. And the plant is not served by public transportation. But I applaud you for carpooling and doing your part.

17. when I bought my first new car--a PINTO--there was a gas war in Detroit
and gas was 19CENTS a gallon. cost me less than $1.50 to fill my little 8 gallon tank--and it got 25-30 mpg!! people can make fun of them all they want, but it was a good little car.

of course, with that 8-gallon tank, and basically a 200-mile range, things could get a bit dicey out here in the west in those days. LOTS of long, empty distances. remember one trip from amarillo to tucumcari--200 miles of absolutely NOTHING--coasted into tucumcari on fumes and a prayer!!

27. I think I got dang lucky with $2.85 yesterday...
Generally it's $2.89 outside of town and $2.99 everywhere in town (where I work).

Between my rotating shifts (I never work the same schedule 2 days in a row) and living out in the boonies, carpool isn't an option for me... :(

29. I start a new job next month and am investigating the possibilities
I may move, I may carpool, or I may drive. It all depends on what is possible. I am not looking forward to driving 80 miles a day but it may end up being the best option.

31. so you never stay late, hence never get overtime or a raise
i would say what you stand to lose financially by carpooling is more than you stand to gain

easy for me to say i suppose, my husband is provided with fuelman and a co. car but he could not do his job if he had to carpool
