Does any know why purple paint was thrown at the 18th hole
of the Open while Tiger Woods was hitting a shot there?

Some kind of protest they said, but I don't know what the protest was about.

just hit one from the fairway at the 18th hole.

It looked like about 8 bottles of the stuff was thrown and made large purple stains all over the green.

5. yeah, when I see purple paint,
I think "Let's conserve water!"

So does everyone else; that's what makes it such an effective tactic.

6. possible. On Tigers last three shots he had a helicopter hovering
over him. It was very loud, I could hear it on the T.V. I guess it must be Brittains equivalent of Homeland Security.

11. Possibly "Fathers for Justice"
A group of estranged fathers trying to change the laws about access to children of separations/divorces. They've done a fair few ludicrous stunts in the last few years such as throwing purple powder at Blair in the House of Commons, etc. Ironically their actions pretty much guarantee that no judge will give them access to their kids since they keep committing illegal acts.

12. That would make sense if they've thrown purple powder in the past.
I've seen all the nutty stuff they've done such as dressing up as super heroes and climbing public buildings, etc. I've got to say, I am impressed with their ability to get noticed. Then again, I'm a bit disappointed they had to do it this time with paint and ruin (temporarily) the 18th - if indeed they are the ones who threw it.

13. Oddly
This isn't making the news here, so I suspect that it is indeed Fathers for Justice and the media is simply ignoring them (possibly at the request of the police/government) since reporting their actions gives them the exposure they desire

14. It was "Fathers for Justice" here is a link to the story.
HOYLAKE, England (AP) - A demonstrator tried to disrupt Sunday's British Open by throwing purple flour bombs onto the green just as Tiger Woods was about to play a chip.

A man was heard to shout "Fathers for justice" as six bombs were thrown onto the putting surface. His demonstration was greeted by a chorus of jeers from the fans sitting around the 18th green at Royal Liverpool and he was led away by police.

Even these purple flour bombs couldn't derail Tiger Woods' quest for an 11th major championship. (Andy Lyons / Getty Images)

The flour bombs left small purple stains on the grass but didn't seem to affect the players
