Holding officials accountable
Last year, President Bush offered $50 million for Osama bin Laden’s head. So far, the only heads that have rolled belong to Dick Cheney’s Chief of Staff Lewis “Scooter” Libby; House majority leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas; former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham, R-Calif.; top GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff, and Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio.
Cunningham admitted to fraud, tax evasion and accepting more than $2.4 million in bribes from defense contractors in return for helping to secure bids for them. Contractors bribe when their product isn’t good enough to win a bid on its own merits, or their product is one that the military doesn’t need and hasn’t requested. Counterintelligence concerns raised in Cunningham’s handling of sensitive U.S. government contracts aren’t yet known.
Abramoff claims he has information that could implicate 60 lawmakers, his plea bargain in lieu of spending 100 years in prison. Look for the Democrats to take over Congress before the November elections.
Bush admitted to spying on Americans without the warrant required by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Last week, a nonpartisan congressional report stated that Bush’s claim of not needing congressional approval to authorize wiretapping without warrants wasn’t “well grounded” in the law. Bush says he possesses “inherent” authority as commander in chief to suspend laws in wartime, demonstrating how primitive he makes Richard Nixon look.
A Pentagon study exposed Bush’s lack of preparedness in armoring U.S. troops despite “calls from the field for additional protection.” Bush was prepared as early as 2002 to do whatever it took to protect corporate global interests. A year before “shock and awe,” Congress granted Bush authorization to use military force against the Netherlands per the “Hague Invasion Act” should any American be brought before the court accused of war crimes.
Bush recently told Americans “to hold their elected leaders to account.” No doubt, Bush will be held accountable for dismantling America’s democratic principles.
