Is the Bush White House so upset by Oregon's suicide law because
the Republicans want to be sole arbitrators of life and death? God can't people stay out of other peoples life and death decisions?

1. They kind of
have to be against assisted suicide if they are going to claim to be pro-life. After all the Terri Schiavo hoo-ha it would be kind of duplicitous of them to say (a) we take no position or (b) we really don't care at all--go for it.

2. Republicans trust big government to make personal decisions
They want to keep individual and states rights out of it completely. Scalia, Thomas, and Roberts are nothing but far right wing Stepford clones.

Remember Terri Schiavo.

3. It would be great to see several other states put Assisted suicide o
this on the ballota in 06 as a sign of solidarity against Roberts, the right and the Bush administration.

4. My Opinion? I think it's all about Big Business can you spell
Big Pharmaceutical Companies that wrote the fucking Drug Bills?

you see the longer they prolong your life, the more drugs and treatment is needed... cynical?

got nothin' to do with being pro-live or faith in "god".

5. They want "ethics boards" to decide
Because they know if its left in the hands of the people, most won't opt for death as is evidenced by Oregon's assisted suicide law. That won't be good because dying people are really expensive to take care of. They'd much prefer hospital ethics boards be able to intervene and unplug all these people, get rid of a whole bunch more that way.

7. Not at all.
They recognize this for what it was their intention for it to be about in the first place- the right of the states to regulate the drug war on their own.

That's what has them so pissed off. The court shot down their little plan by ruling for the state, which opens up the possibility that other states could say, "well, wait. Does the federal government have the right to regulate any drug not covered by the FDA?"

11. Not enough in Oregon anyway
You have to have a terminal illness. I don't think the family can even make the decision, only the terminally ill patient.

10. They've been fighting it for years...
Assisted-suicide case a lesson in hypocrisy

So what is Bush thinking? Why is the Justice Department trying to use a broad interpretation of an obscure federal statute to restrict a law legislated twice by the citizens of Oregon that has not led to any problems or difficulties since its enactment?

There is only one answer: The president is not telling the truth. He is only willing to respect the decisions of Americans if he agrees with them. He is only willing to advocate for a conservative court if it upholds a social agenda that he agrees with.

12. There is ONLY ONE way with the republicans
Commit a heinous murder. That way, the GOVERNMENT will execute you. What ever happened to "Small Government" and letting people make their own choices? (BTW - I'm not against capital punishment as long as its air-tight, but how you get air tight is beyond me!)

You nailed it, DanCa.

Their combined positions on "life" do lead one to that conclusion...

WOW! What an epiphany you have given me! They are not "hypocrites" on their "life" positions at all- they just want to CONTROL life- as you said- be the sole arbiters of life & death...

22. I immed. thought it was because of wanting to squeeze out every nickel
They don't want anyone leaving the party early, so to speak. If there's a way to make this person's suffering worth at least a cent or two, they want it dragged out as loooooooong as possible.

And, yes, the power to control speaks to their (now visible) inner fascist.
