Bush: Girls have a choice even if they are "obligated to comply"

"Speaking to reporters at the start of a four-day trip to Liberia, Ghana and Nigeria, Bush said, "I'm always a little bit irritated when I hear the criticism of abstinence, because abstinence is absolutely 100% effective in eradicating a sexually transmitted disease" (Wilson, Reuters AlertNet, 1/15). She added, "In many countries where girls feel obligated to comply with the wishes of men, girls need to know that abstinence is a choice" (Sammon, Washington Times, 1/16)."

I will repeat; Laura Bush, speaking about girls in certain developing countries, "where girls feel obligated to comply with the wishes of men, girls need to know that abstinence is a choice"

Yes, the choice is, have sex with this man, or get the sh&^%$t beat out of me, or get a stoning in the public square!!!

Silly girls, just listen to the learned librarian, and you'll go far!!!

17. Not just that - with death rates and patterns of kinship - many young
girls have no choice but to marry an older man. Or some women - to feed a child - must prostitute themselves. How would you tell those women to practice abstinence? Cause to a woman who has NOTHING to feed her kids... death in a few years from AIDS vs. her child (children) surviving past the age of 5 - is the better choice. And that is the reality on the ground. So do these people deserve any choice whatsoever? Why not condoms and birth control pills.

We all made this same choice not a long time ago. It is about poverty meaning you have no choice.

Bush is full of Bullshit!

24. She doesn't get the TV. Her parents do for selling her off into marriage.
But it is an important thing because then her younger brothers can get really educated and have long lives of their own. Her parents were poor. Not all of their children could have happy lives. Surviving was more important. And she doesn't get the choice to perhaps "wait out granpa" (her 65 year old husband). Because she has no birth control pills. And she will get any AIDS he came across in his 65 years. And so will her children. And her children will be orphaned too. But the most important thing was that nobody saw a condom or birth control pills:sarcasm: that would hurt so much - if anyone in her had to face those abominations

27. Access Denied
that was a very powerful story in this video studying the affects of the global gag rule, focusing on the African nation of Zambia. A man with a family planning organization told a woman if she didn't stop being a prostitute, she would get AIDS and die. She asked how long it took to die of AIDS, and he told her 10 years. To which she replied something like, "Well, my son will be 16 then, so he'll be fine, but if I don't do this, we'll stave within a month."

28. I read it in the Report on Africa. That was the reality of women all
over the world until perhaps the twentieth Century in the West. Very little choice. Why - now when we have so many more choices - why?

I've given her a free ride for way too long. Those are the stupidest words ever out of her mouth. She makes me almost wish she was faced with a situation where she had on choice.

31. Reminds me of an old Jerry Clowers tall tale.
Use to tell about growing up in Mississippi and going coon hunting. When the dogs would tree a raccoon, his friend John would climb the tree and make it jump out of the tree into the middle of the pack of dogs. He said John wanted to give the raccoon a fighting chance. When anyone asked if that was a cruel thing to do, he said, "well at least that raccoon has the option of whipping all them dogs and walkin' off if he wants to."

Way to go Laura, you're making us so proud!!! :banghead:

Or that they're booked solid with obligations?

Why doesn't Laura give driving lessons, instead? That would make as much sense.
