I sent in a LTTE to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and am hoping that it will be printed soon.
It's a bit of a stretch to think it will be printed, the rag has notoriously right-wing apologists as editors. Still they do allow other views in the LTTEs.
I'll post an update if it gets printed, gonna haveta call my mom too. She's definitely gonna want like 20 copies.
A Weak Defense
After the recent revelation of illegal wiretapping, in violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, Republicans have come out trying to justify the president’s actions. Falling back on their favorite tactic of blaming Clinton, they have tried the “two wrongs make a right” argument, as exemplified by Mr. Lemon of Cabot.
I laugh to think of the “Religious Right” using the “two wrongs” argument, but it is understandable. Their constant fear-based rhetoric about terrorists and national security is losing strength. Sadly their argument has no merit. Clinton authorized searches in 1993, not in violation of FISA. Which wasn’t amended to include searches until 1995 and was signed by Clinton himself.
Bush’s actions are a clear violation of the Fourth Amendment. It is a shameless power grab, and an attempt to suspend the Constitution. They claim only to be wiretapping “terrorist suspects.” After this Administration lied and manipulated it’s way into attacking Iraq, the idea of trusting them at their word is ludicrous. For those who defend these actions. I remind you, the political pendulum will swing the other way and the powers you grant today will be theirs tomorrow. Do you really want Hillary Clinton to one day have the power to suspend your right to bear arms, your free speech, or the freedom of the press?
The only way to prevent this is to use this as a stepping-stone to set Bush up as a dictator. Do you really want this?
