It would be nice to know who and where.

And yes, it's one of the most ignorant statements about stem cell research ever uttered, and that's saying a lot.

12. First of all, they aren't fetuses
A zygote is what, two to four cells? And then it's a larger collection of cells-that is what they are talking about, not a fetus. We need to make a video showing what these cells really look like. I think that many think that what we're talking about are miniature Gerber babies or something. You can't "harvest" limbs and organs from something that doesn't have them yet. Geez.

22. Didn't you hear about the woman who awoke in the bathtub full of ice?
There was a note with the phone number of the local hospital. It said "Call this number quick or you'll be dead." That's when she looked down and saw her abdomen cut open and her fetus gone! I swear! It happened to a friend of my brother's secretary's mailman! Honest!

35. You're so right.
People need to know what zygotes look like. If they could see it was just a few cells, they might think differently.

I have some experience with this because I went through IVF three times before I had a successful pregnancy (he turned 15 last week). Each time I had the embryos replaced in my womb, we had the opportunity to see them on a monitor beforehand, sitting there in a petri dish. On my first two unsuccessful attempts at IVF, they were two-cell zygotes, but then on the third try one of my three fertilized eggs had actually divided into four whole cells (and I still wonder if that's the one that survived, the one who now thinks the laundry fairy picks up his dirty clothes off the floor and returns them to him washed and folded).

Here's what I think: I never produced many eggs so there were no leftover embryos, but even if there had been I would have had no objection to them being used for scientific research, especially if it meant saving lives. As much as I wanted a baby, I knew (and know) that a two- or four-cell zygote isn't one, whether conception takes place in a laboratory or the "regular" way.

Sometimes men joke about being accused of killing the "pre-conceived" when they masturbate and everybody laughs about it but, damn, at this rate I wouldn't be surprised if that's not next on the right-wing fundie agenda.

Crazy times we live in.

30. Transcript here

"Fetus farming" appears to be a scare that has been put around to give the far right something to get up in arms about. A week ago, Raw Story couldn't find any evidence anyone was proposing 'fetus farming', but the Republicans were going to introduce a bill against it, just in case. A week later, it's law. Congress moves quickly when it has some partisan PR to do.

37. So once again the RepubliCONs are making a mountain out of a grain of sand
just so they can suck up to a base that is stupid enough to buy into this melodramatic and baseless nonsense. Meanwhile BuSh* takes a stand against real honest to goodness science that would actually not harm a LIVING viable thing and yet would help save lives of LIVING BREATHING human beings.

Goodness but these neo-fundie-CONs make me so darn angry with their pandering to the kool aid drinking base. :grr:

36. Here's the line, I think:
"This good law prohibits one of the most egregious abuses in biomedical research: the trafficking in human fetuses that are created with the sole intent of aborting them to harvest their parts.

Human beings are not a raw material to be exploited..."

That last bit is so so so hypocritical.
