In Georgia, Ralph Reed Concedes Defeat
In Georgia, Reed Concedes Defeat

In Georgia tonight, Ralph Reed (R) conceded defeat in Georgia’s Republican primary for lieutenant governor, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports. With his defeat to Casey Cagle (R), Reed became the first election casualty in the Jack Abramoff scandal.

"Reed left quickly but stopped to say he was pround of the race he ran. He said he had no plans to run for office again right now."

Meanwhile, in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, Mark Taylor claimed victory over Cathy Cox.

8. Hmmm, I dunno. Maybe Ralphie will get indicted?
I'm really hoping the Abramoff tentacles will streach very wide and snag a lot of the dirtbags he dealt with! This is just the beginning of this story, it could get very interesting!

At least, some tremors in the Christian right-wing of the Party, I would guess. This is a great victory for Democrats, even though we don't know it yet...

11. Unfortunately, Uber-Republican Casey Cagle is the Lt. Gov.- Repub.nominee.
:puke: I detest him for many reasons. I'm glad Reed is out, but I shudder at the thought of a Lt. Gov. Cagle. :( We have a long, hard slog ahead of us here in GA.

26. I was thrilled that Reed lost, but...
I was watching Cagle last night on Fox 5 and was horrified that a man in his position can't speak proper english. I know that * made it hip to look stupid, but as a relative newcomer to Georgia and the South (I moved here in late '97) I am still amazed by the range of people who talk like they're auditioning for a revival of Hee Haw.

But at least no matter what else goes down, my Lt. Gov. won't be Ralph Reed. And the best thing is that it was a Repuke primary in a (currently) Repuke state. They can't blame his defeat on the evil, hated liberals. Although they'll probably try anyway.

18. We can't let him get away...
If Democrats are to win in November here in Georgia, we've got to make sure that voters understand that Ralph Reed has been, and always will be, at the heart of the repig party in Georgia, the South and, indeed, the country. The guy that beat him, Cagle, is simply a 'less-slick' version but just as slimy in his financial manipulations. The campaign has to remind voters that reed was responsible for the bush victory strategy across the south in 2004...that the so-called Christian Coalition proudly manipulated legislatures across the south to block casino gambling - and knew that they were doing it just to get rid of competition for their contributors. Hell, they aren't any better than 'Murder Inc.' - all they did was get rid of one gangs competition for money.

Yes, ralph reed may be gone, but we can't let him be forgotten.

19. What people in the South need to realize is that GW is a phony christian
"born again" to get their vote and could not care less about them, It was a Karl Rove PR move for their votes and nothing more. Delusional fools, but then again, they continue to believe in an imaginary sky daddy! Ah well! ..............fools rush in.

28. I share some your basic outlook, but...
don't forget that, by all accounts, the man whose picture you use for your avatar, as well as Messers. Clinton & Carter, numerous other lefty heroes, and just about every figure from the civil rights movement also believe(d) in "an imaginary sky daddy." When we make broad attacks on religious faith we play into the hands of the RW, AND we risk alienating lefties and moderates who are believers.

35. WTF?????
<snip>
With 43 percent of precincts reporting, the Georgia Secretary of State’s office showed Cagle with 55.2 percent of the vote, compared with 44.8 percent for Reed.
<snip>

Less than half of the precincts may have reported their results but so help me the ones that did prove that there sure are a lot of really stupid and/or corrupt people in Georgia. He had 44.8% of the vote! A proven liar, fraud, and crook had 44.8% of the reported results. What the hell does this mean? Either they don't know about little Ralphie's corruption factor or they just don't care? Do they think being a Christian includes racism and theft by deception?

40. Yeah they covered the islands around Savannah with them
I really wanted to make up some stickers that said "Gamblin'" and slap them on top of the Reed signs...
But the big signs on people's properties, the ones that reflected real support, were invariably Cagle.

Reed will probably blame "liberls" who crossed over and voten in the Repuke primary on his loss...I think the 44% of the vote reflected more name recognition than anything else. At least I hope so. A pet peeve of mine is that, unless one reads the papers or watches TV, one gets little info on most of the candidates in GA. It used to be, at least in California, that you would get a pamphlet with position statements and qualifications on the candidates. Now, you have to really spend a lot of effort to find out what the candidates stand for. Same was true in Texas- some of the people were just phantoms.
And before any of you sanctimonius folks out there flame me, yes, I know you can get the info if you want to look for it. I just think that we would all be better served if the process was easier.
