Things have been simmering for a long time. This latest assassination promises to bring a war the likes of which we have never seen. It will surely engulf the entire world. It will be the war to end all wars.

Sadly, I must report that 19 days and 92 years ago, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, the nephew of Emperor Franz Joseph and heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife, Sophie, duchess of Hohenburg, were assassinated in Sarajevo.

On June 28, 1914, at approximately 11:00 am, Franz Ferdinand and his wife were killed in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, a member of Young Bosnia (or perhaps The Black Hand). The event, known as the Assassination in Sarajevo, was the trigger of World War I. Franz Ferdinand is interred in Schloß Artstetten, Austria.
No evidence has been found to support suggestions that his low-security visit to Sarajevo was arranged by elements within Austro-Hungarian official circles with the intention of exposing him to the risk of assassination so as to remove a potentially troublesome royal personage from the scene.

And you may have noticed that the Middle East is spiralling into a vortex of war. Because of some kidnapped soldiers.

WWI happened because Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated (along with simmering tensions that were building for years) and led to what was called the "War to end all wars".

The current War is happening because a couple of soldiers have been kidnapped (along with simmering tensions that were building for years) and will, in all likelyhood, build into what will be called WWIII.

If that's your overall mindset, I pity you. It's that sort of attitude that allows renewed war to happen over and over again, because no one pays attention to History. Everyone sleeps through History class. So as a result we have the same recurring situations.

just a McGuffin. An excuse for people to take actions that they were already going to take. To quote Rumsfeld, "bring it all in -- things related and not". In this case, the kidnapped Israeli soldiers merely provide the spark -- little different than the tit-for-tat Arafat and Sharon did on the Temple Mount in 2001, resulting in the Second Intifada. Or the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage, giving Bush the cover he needed to avoid a sound defeat at the hands of a Senator from that state. Or a ship blowing up in Havana harbor. Little events make good excuses.
