The talking points memos are out..."If Mexico or Canada lobbed bombs..."
A caller to Stephanie Millers show just called in and practically quoted the story which ran earlier today on DU, re: "If Mexico or Canada lobbed bombs over the border, we'd have every right to defend ourselves." Stephanie tried to point out that that isn't the way this conflict started, and the caller would really have any of it...nothing else mattered to her. She obviously got her marching orders from someone in the GOP. She sticked to her script nicely, except she forgot to call Miller a Jew hater.

2. A person could say that
A closer analogy would be if a radical right wing group of newfie's (apologies to newfoundlanders - it is just an analogy after all) went south and lobbed bombs at NY -

That America would reciprocate by invading Alberta and Saskatchewan.

3. Or more pointedly, if an American neo-Nazi group lobbed bombs

on Toronto, would that justify Canada's bombing of DC?

On edit: I think that is the disconnection.

4. You guys are forgetting, this didn't start with dropping bombs.
A better analogy would be if the Canadian Mounties kidnapped two National Guardsmen. Do you REALLY think it would be then morally justifiable to start bombing the shit out of Canada? Really?

5. Why yes, because those are Americans.

We'd be within our rights to bomb Canada back into the Ice Age. But if the U.S. kidnapped two Mounties, Canada would have no justification to bomb us.

And for the sarcasm impaired, no, I don't believe that but my point in the previous post is that turning it around this way is when lunkheads like that caller might start to see the problem with her thinking.

6. comparing apples and oranges is demagogery
question : if a bunch of Canadian natives wanted to retake parts of New England (for whatever ideological/historical reason) and launched rockets over the border, would it justify the flattening of the overall Canadian infrastructure ?

Answer : no by any moral and legal standards.

7. If an apple...
Edited on Tue Jul-18-06 12:41 PM by orwell
...lobbed a cherry at an orange, would the orange be justified in hurling grapefruits?

Or should the watermelon step in to restore order to the fruit stand?

targets inside Tel Aviv, completely destroying its international airport."
