6. I've had a similar thought for years
and not just for the warring nations, but maybe for everyone...

I'd even suggest ecstacy or some other strong euphoriant, if there is such a word...

9. Skip Intro, that is a good idea. I don't know how to do it, or where to
get it, but MDMA or some other empathogen would chill those folks out on all sides, all factions, 24-7, inside half an hour.

Application of the plan might take some fancy doing. But I hear you completely on the idea.

It's going to take a hundred more generations to reach peace in this part of the world, and we could get it done in thirty minutes with widespread application of euphoric compounds. Shouldn't have to burn the house down to bake the chicken.

16. Wouldn't work... Not everybody's brain works the same as yours
Just because you feel euphoric when you do X or Acid or Mushrooms or whatever doesn't mean that the next guy isn't going to get freaked out, violent and paranoid. I've been getting high for decades and came to the realization a long time ago that drugs are not for everyone. They do not always invoke a common experience with each user and most people are just not equipped to deal with it.

18. There was a post earlier this week about
a govt study on the effects of mushrooms on humans. Many signed with personal knowledge regarding the euphoria and spiritual awakening that accompanied the use of the mushroom used in the study - and that the effects lasted, in some cases, months.

I suggest we find a way of getting to the entire ME water supply... maybe this is could be added as a side job as be part of our ongoing Project X?

But if you could get the warring principals to more warming principles, the road forward may be clearer and less bloody.

sneak over to the ME under cover of darkness and slip a lot of mickey in their drinking water? Come on, it would be fun. The leaders would, of course, be the first to sample our special inspirational water - that could be a special DU unit that maybe the moderators could lead.

They would never suspect it - esp as the NSA isn't monitoring this site at all.

28. Someone should engineer a "love virus" that affects whatever part of
the brain makes people angry and hateful. The virus would spread around the world causing a mild flu-like illness that no one would make note of. Then a few months later it will occur to everyone that crime and war have pretty much ended everywhere.

54. NO! The alliance tried that
and created the REAVERS!!!
:scared:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reaver_(Firefly)
In the movie Serenity, Reavers are revealed to be humans from the planet Miranda. The Alliance government on Miranda added a chemical agent known as G-23 Paxilon Hydrochlorate, or simply "Pax" (Latin for "peace"), to the planet's air processors. The Pax was supposed to calm the population and weed out aggression. The agent worked, but too well. The result was that 99.9% of the population became so lethargic that they stopped working, breeding, talking, and eventually, eating and breathing. They lay down wherever they stood and allowed themselves to die. The remaining 0.1% of the planet's 30 million people had the opposite reaction to the Pax. Their "aggressor response" increased beyond madness, and they became mindlessly violent and aggressive without limit. Approximately 30,000 Reavers were created.<5> They killed all the government officials who remained on Miranda, broke into the laboratories where the scientists had locked themselves in, tortured them and ate them alive. They then left the planet, where they developed into the savage sub-race of the Reavers.

57. That would be a problem, wouldn't it.
Another bad outcome: What if we become peaceful and incapable of war, but just then some aggressive race of space aliens invades? I think what would happen is that a "hate" virus would have to be engineered and released (presumably there would be a handful of people who were not affected by the love virus enough to accomplish this). Then we could beat the crap out of the aliens (we've all read some good Terra Ueber Alles novels, haven't we?) and send a new love virus around again.

I wish a tidal surge on the whole area washing away all the so called "holy" sites and submerged like the fabled Atlantis.

I don't care where they disperse - as long as they are forbidden to bring their hatreds to their new domains in order to enter.

I am so sick of this conflict - they screwed up mightily in the formation of Israel by dispossessing the Palestinians without recompense and I am sick sick sick of the whole thing.

If not for needing a "friend" in the region due to our oil interests and the sympathetic history from the holocaust and our own guilt, we would have nothing to do with the area. Oh yes, and the crazy Christians who think that "place" has anything to do with real faith.

Now on to the Vatican.....

37. whiney bastards?
I agree Israel has often gone too far in "securing their borders", however, most of these nations do not RECOGNISE ISRAEL'S VERY RIGHT TO EXIST.
Israel has a right to exist and should defend that right.
Palestine has a right to exist; Lebanon has a right to exist.
You can't very well negotiate with groups that vow to "drive the Jews into the sea". If Israel is willing to stand up to that proposition, and that makes them whiney bastards, well then I'm with them.

That's all. I am tired of reading articles where they're literally killing each other over pittances of land and chopping down each others olive trees and such idiocy. The whole thing is ridiculous, draw the damned lines and be done with it. If people don't want to believe in the God you believe in, so what. This crazy crap has got to stop and somebody with some common sense has got to stand up and say so. It's equally horrific that the world's super powers are playing them off each other over the oil. Enough games, enough lies, just enough already.

47. Here's what I say we do...
Leaders will NEVER create peace. Even when they make treaties, it's not going to be real peace, because it's only being agreed upon by the people who would benefit from war in the first place. And when they create wars, they're the ones profiting, although they say it's in the name of their people. But it's NEVER about the people. EVER.

So I say that the only way to true peace is to gather up a bunch of random-ass people from all over the world, put them all together in a building, people with no experience or standing in politics whatsoever, and put cameras everywhere, tell them to discuss various government-created problems and record everything they say to each other, and I guarantee that they will come up with the most revolutionary ideas anyone has ever heard.

Sorry, but with a question like that, you can't expect a more realistic answer.

Is it fair to compare an entire country to one militant group?

Maybe I am just ignorant -but I always thought of Hezbollah as just a terrorist group  ?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/13/AR2006071301743.html?nav=hcmodule

I disagree with the current Israeli govt's actions but don't think an its fair to compare an entire country to a radical Shiite group (which doesn't even have the support of all or even the majority of Lebanese people- at least from what I read)

(don't pound me if I am showing my ignorance ok ;)? All I want is peace everwhere and I know that Hezbollah is part of the new Lebanese govt..kinda..but still...
I am new to DU, though I have been lurking for years-I know you got some feisty kids here :P!)

in our house of glass. It is a section of the leadership that entraps weakness and popular animosity and prejudice into a convenient cycle of violence. A few know exactly why and where it is going. The people and most of their benighted "leaders" are being sucked down into it. We are hardly now in a position to wax superior, indignant or isolationist.

Bush/Cheney has planted US into this mess- for his own convenience- up to our necks and our children's necks.

We are all screwed. The screwers, I see are not the object of direct rage in this post. In that, they succeed and our grand drama is all piteous foolery for their amusement.

70. I'm with OPERATIONMINDCRIME- there's no need
for us to join in the 'shame on them'- shame is the least of their problems- They are both being fucked over- and some of 'us' are not only encourageing them, we're egging them on-

This is a lose lose situation. And the US taking one side, and refusing to admit our partisanship, and bias, is only making a bigger hell out of what is already a freaking mess.

Shame on us for our manipulation, selfish, and hypocritical 'guidance'-

If we can't be part of the solution, we should at least stop being part of the problem.

55. The whole ME has been a concern for far too long.
There is only one reason we even give a shit about the region and that is oil. The sooner we rid ourselves from that addiction the sooner we can say "fuck 'em".

58. I agree!
We shouldn't get involved in their messes. It's none of our business.

61. It's like a version of the Hatfeild McCoy war
When will it end? The people in power don't seem to give a rats ass. The people stuck in the crossfire don't have any power.

62. We need help on the Gulf Coast... and we promise not to blow you up.
Stop sending money to the ME and send it to Louisiana and Mississippi instead... please.

67. Oh, Swamp Rat, my heart breaks for you guys!
Some of us have NOT forgotten you who continue to suffer on the Gulf Coast as you try to rebuild your homes and your lives ... with damn little help from our government which has all the money in the world for warmaking. Makes me positively ILL, it does.

The U.S. needs to divert that $6 million PER WEEK it's spending in Iraq to the Gulf Coast of our own country, helping our citizens instead of continuing to punish and murder Iraqis and others in lands thousands of miles from our shores!

I haven't been able to send $$$ or volunteer to work alongside you all physically because of my own circumstances; I live almost as poorly as most residents of the Ninth Ward or a rural Mississippi town (pre-Katrina), struggling to survive in a rundown environment. But maybe that's one reason I can identify so well with those on the Gulf Coast who face such daunting situations in their lives!

Just think, if we poured as much funding and human energy into reclaiming lives ravaged by Nature's storms, instead of wreaking more havoc and harm with our resources, how much better life would be in BOTH places.

One of my best online friends lives in Opalousas, LA, which has several thousand new members of its community after Katrina -- and they're treating them well, helping as best they can. Talking to her every week, I can never complain about my struggles when I know how others who've been abandoned by our government after being driven from their homes by Nature must be faring. It's just not right!

So much about human behavior these days is not right. JUST. NOT. RIGHT.

71. Oh how I wish we'd learn that money spent on building up
life-giving endeavors, is so much better than the brazillions we waste on life destroying efforts-

How about screwing this 'war on terror'- or really fighting it for what it is- hurricanes are terror, tornados, illness, poverty, disease, accidents, suffering of all kinds is TERROR- While there will likely always be those whose desire for power and control will cause problems for many people, the reality that every single one of us who live, will face the TERROR of natural disasters, accidents, sickness, and human suffering should be where we put our efforts, our money, and our energies- for the good of ALL human'kind'-

We need some noise about how ill prepared we are for this hurricane season Swamp Rat- before it comes in the manner of 'breaking news'-

Wish I could help somehow- !!! my heart is with you- for what that is worth-

peace,
blu

63. sigh
It's getting pretty hard to have hope for humans these days. I'd like to be all philosophical and remind everyone of the message in Shakespeare's The Tempest. Maybe I should stress that the ME's problems are damned complicated and there are no easy solutions - no band-aids. I was even contemplating a bit about how we would all band together if we attacked by aliens.

But then I read a thread like this and all I can hear is the voice of George Carlin:

"We're going away. Pack your shit, folks. We're going away. And we won't leave much of a trace, either. Thank God for that. Maybe a little styrofoam. Maybe. A little styrofoam. The planet'll be here and we'll be long gone. Just another failed mutation. Just another closed-end biological mistake. An evolutionary cul-de-sac. The planet'll shake us off like a bad case of fleas. A surface nuisance."

68. I normally wouldn't even read a thread like this,
and reading the bulk of the responses explains why.

But I have to say that I'm heartened to see that some DUers checked in here to offer a powerful counterpoint to the abundant nihilism, and I'm very proud of them.

If the rest of the world hadn't thrown up their hands at the warring enemies of the Middle East long ago, it might not be in the mess it's in now. Powerful entities have cynically USED the bitter emotions and violent vengeance of the ME's inhabitants to further their own agenda, and that's as wrong as wrong can get. I tend to think NO ONE who has stood uncaringly by, or worse yet added to the trouble, should feel free from blame in this whole thing.

A bit like the Hatfield/McCoy feud? Yes, I can see that, only the scale of this feud is far greater and the damage done is immeasurably worse. Others had to step in to stop the inter-family violence in Kentucky and West Virginia and end the harm the feud was doing to the larger community. We should take a hint from them.

Neo-cons and PNACkers believe using other people is a perfectly acceptable practice and turn a callous blind eye to the suffering of their victims. I wouldn't expect liberals to feel the same way OR to accept such behavior on the part of others. Nor would I expect them to throw up their hands and turn their backs because a challenge to their peace-making skills is monumental and resistant to solutions.

Is this really the same DU I've been feeling at home at for the past year? :(
